The name change to Schererville in 1878 when the railroad came through town. In 2002, Schererville voters passed a resolution recognizing autism as a disability for which there are no cure or effective treatment available from traditional medical procedures or therapies alone. As a result, Autism Speaks has been based in the town since then to promote well-being for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Additionally, Crossroads Health Care Park is located in the heart of downtown Schererville and offers free care to those with ASD through Coordinated Behavioral Health Services (CBT), also known as Autism Rehabilitation Services (ARS) or Specialty Intervention Programs (BIP). According to the 2000 U.S Census, there were 4,711 people living in Schererville who identified themselves as white alone (% non-Hispanic whites), black alone (% non-Hispanic black), Hispanic (% Latinos), or some other race/ethnicity (% unknown). There were 3% Native American citizens living in Schererville who self-identified as such on census forms; however no data exists to support this claim beyond anecdotal evidence from locals. As of 2013, these numbers have decreased slightly to 2%, though they may still be present due to recent decreases throughout most major U.S metropolitan areas according to Census Bureau figures released that year. According to 2010 census estimates released that year, 9% of residents aged 25 years or older had one mental health condition out of every 100 persons; this number increases rapidly for adults over 50 years old reaching 15%. Of all individuals age 25 years or older who reported one mental health condition out of every 100 persons within their community during 2010, 7% had ASD.

Schererville is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne– Angola, IN-Wabash Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by Charles Scherer and his wife Sarah. In 1868, the town became a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The Scherersville post office closed in 1984. Schererville received its first municipal services in 1907 when it incorporated as a village. Schererville lost its municipal status in 1973 but regained it in 1987 when it became an unincorporated community within Hancock County. According to the 2010 census, Schererville has a total area of , of which (or 99% of it) is land and (or 1% of it) is water.

The town grew rapidly for a number of reasons, including its location near the newly formed Indiana Territory, access to resources such as timber and water, and its location within easy transportation distance of other settlements in the region. By 1830, Schererville had a population of about 120 people. In 1835, it became one of four towns in what was then known as "The Prairie District" west of Chicago. The townrand became increasingly isolated from other settlement until annexation by Chicago in 1847. Schererville experienced significant growth after becoming an official city in 1925. At that time it had a population of over 3,000 people and was home to many businesses and government offices. In 1960, the city annexing part of neighboring Elkhart County made Schererville even larger with a population approaching 10,000 people.
