Schererville is a small town located in central Indiana. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vanderburgh County. The first settler in Schererville was James Haughey, who arrived in 1814. A post office called Haughey was established in 1815, and the community took its name from him. In 1836, John Dickey settled here and named it after himself. Dickey had come to Indiana from Connecticut as a boy on horseback. He became involved with farming and developed a large tract of land around Schererville which he sold to others in the mid-19th century. His heirs continued to own and use Schererville as their principal residence until about 1910 when they moved away for economic reasons. In 1963, two brothers, Dick and Gene Beal, founded Beal Rubber Company nearby which remains one of the largest rubber companies in the United States today. The company has since been merged into Otter Tail Corporation (OTTC) Otter Tail is home to many diverse businesses including Hubbell Paper Mill which opened in 1925 and continues to produce high quality paper products; Patriot Mutual Insurance Company; Bass Pro Shops; Wacoal USA Factory; Chrysler Jeep LLC - Dodge Ram Truck Manufacturing Plant; ANSYS Inc.; BAE Systems Limited - Schererville Headquarters McConnell International Airport serves as a major transportation hub for central Indiana with cargo flights coming into Indianapolis via Hammondsport Municipal Airport or Lafayette/Lafayette County Airport outside of Lafayette The surrounding area has several agricultural properties such as Memphis Genetics Inc., corn seed producer AGCO Grain elevates crops on 5 acres near downtown Schererville while also providing feed for local animals

Schererville is a small town in Howard County, Indiana. It was founded in 1836 by German immigrants, and has been continuously inhabited since that time. The town was named after Johann Gottfried Scherer, an early settler. In the 1840s, Schererville became a railroad junction, and grew rapidly as a result. The population of Schererville reached 5,000 by 1850. By 1860, the population had increased to 10,000; and by 1870 it had reached 20,000. However, due to industrialization in the late 19th century, Schererville began to decline in popularity. its population decreased from 30,000 in 1890 to 15,000 by 1930. However, since then it has slowly regained some of its former prosperity.
