In 1871, Schererville began to grow as a small town in Randolph County. The town was founded by John and Sarah Scherer, who were both farmers. The first settlers in the community were John and Mary Goodrich, who purchased land from the tribe of Potawatomi. In 1872, the Goodrichs moved to their present home on North Main Street. The following year saw the founding of a post office in Schererville. The Postmaster General at that time was James Caddis, who served until 1875. In 1876, the first gun barrel factory was built in Schererville. It was operated by George Auld and his son-in-law William Henshawe. At that time, gun barrels were made from softwood with a shot shape called a “buzzard” design. In 1881, Schererville became part of Union Township which was organized within Randolph County. By this time, gun barrels had become an important industry in the community due to their high quality and durability. Over time, further factories were built both within Union Township itself as well as outside it for production of different types of firearms including rifles and shotguns. In 1911, Union Township merged into Howard County and remained under that county’s jurisdiction until it became one unit again in 1970 when Indiana statehood occurred

One significant event from this time period occurred when American Federation Of Labor (AFL) organizer Mary Daly visited Schererville to speak with workers about unionizing their employers; she left after being heckled by local residents who felt her presence would disrupt their way-of-life. This event helped spur organized labor efforts throughout central Indiana during the mid 1800s
