Schererville is a town in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Schererville–Norton Township–Anderson, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was organized on February 14, 1859 from parts of Norton Township and Anderson Township. The original name for Schererville was "Newcastle." In 1881 the community changed its name to Schererville after Major General Ebenezer Scherer who served in the U.S. 7th Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and later became superintendent of schools in Crawfordsburg, Kentucky. The first post office at Scheimerville opened on November 1, 1857 and served until it closed on December 11, 1861 due to lack of mail service in that area at that time. The first settler to arrive in what would be Schererville was William Hammond who immigrated from England in 1836 and platted what would become present-day Schererville on land he purchased from John Pritchard near where modern day Purdue University stands today. Hammond's home still stands within the town limits today as does his barn which has been converted into apartments since 1986 by local developer Bruce Ritchie and his wife Peggy Ritchie Jnr.. In 1861 Schererville had a population of 5 inhabitants with 2 buildings being built including one house that still stands today as part of downtownSchererence village square development spearheaded by Mayor Tullio Lappeenranta . In 1865 when Indianapolis amalgamated with other towns in Evans County (the county then named Morton) most residents chose to move out or remained small farmers living primarily off their land while others began working for larger businesses such as Wm Hargrave & Sons foundry located just south of town limits along I-465 across from now known as Purdue University By 1870 there were nearly 100 citizens living within city limits accounting for almost all aspect of business life including manufacturing; this growth halted soon thereafter when Evans County seceded from Indiana following the American Civil War becoming an independent state called Illinois only to be annexed again by Indiana upon its reincorporation into the Union In 1872 much like many other communities throughoutIndiana new businesses were formed due to heavy industry being established around railroad tracks adjacent to town limit providing jobs for many locals however by 1880 only 3% (or fewer than 50 citizens) remained employed within city limits making it difficult for any significant growth . This period saw a large influx of Irish immigrants who worked seasonal jobs picking crops on nearby farms until they could afford permanent homes . Most Irish Americans left early 20th century America citing social unrest abroad coupled with high taxes payable back home which contributed significantly to economic decline overall during those years After votes were taken earlier this year allowing annexation back into Evans County another wave of Irish immigrants arrived beginning workin
