After spending weeks ashore looking for food and water sources they finally reached shore at Beaumont-sur-Mer approximately nine miles from where they had started their journey only to find German tanks blocking their way! As soldiers struggled against these obstacles scores were killed or wounded before being able to return fire which forced them inland towards Utah Beach where some managed make it back but many more didn't make it alive! Schererville is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, located on the banks of the Little Wabash River. The town has a population of 3,898 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by George Scherer and his wife Eliza Scherer. The first post office was established in 1838. The present courthouse was built in 1911. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a store. But over time, development occurred throughout the community, with more businesses and residences being erected. Over time, Schererville has become an important node within Hendricks County for economic development and cultural appreciation. In addition to its role as a commercial center, Schererville also retains its historical significance as the home of one of Hendricks County's most prominent families: the Scherers. George Scherer (1814-1893) was an early settler in what is now Schererville and played an important role in developing the community both politically and economically. He served two terms as mayor of Schererville from 1843 to 1846 and again from 1850 to 1853; he also served on Hendricks County's first board of supervisors from 1840 to 1845. George's son JuliusScherer (1841-1927) continued his father's tradition of political activity by serving three terms as mayor from 1865 to 1870; he also held several other civic posts during his career including trustee for Hendricks Community College from 1893 until his death in 1927; while GeorgeScherer never attained high levels of success professionally, he did achieve some measure self-sufficiency through his ownership and management of a local grocery store that operated continuously until 1951

The first white people to live in Schererville were the Peltz family who arrived in 1812. The town was founded by Nicholas Scherer, a German immigrant, and his wife Catharine. The Scherervilles were the second white family to reside in what is now Indiana. They came from Nappanee, Indiana, which was then part of Illinois. In 1836, Nicholas Scherer donated land to the town for public school purposes and named it after himself. In 1851, John Witherspoon became the first postmaster of Schererville. He served until his death in 1862. His widow Mary Witherspoon continued as postmaster until her death in 1889. After John Witherspoon's death, his widow appointed their son William Hetherington as Postmaster on December 15th, 1862. WhenWilliamHetherington died in 1913, his widow appointed their daughter Alice Hetherington as Postmaster on December 15th, 1913. Alice Hetherington served until her retirement on May 1st, 1949. After Alice Hetherington's retirement, her son Howard Hetherington became Postmaster on May 1st, 1949 until his death on October 21st of that same year at the age of 91 years old.
