The history of Schererville dates back to 1834 when a post office called Schererville was established. In 1840, the name of the town was changed from Schererville to Vernon because Vernon had been selected as the site for a new courthouse. In 1852, Vernon became a village and in 1862 it became an incorporated city. On July 2, 1874, Schererville became one of two towns in Wayne County (the other being Terre Haute) that were merged into Indianapolis due to annexation by Indianapolis. The population of Schererville has fluctuated over time with changes in industry and population growth throughout most of its existence. Today, much like many other small towns throughout America, Schererville is home to businesses and residents that are descendants of those who first settled hereabouts. Many families have kept their roots here through various generations and continue to participate in local events and businesses including music festivals and antique shows each fall/winter; both indoors and outdoors on beautiful days!
Schererville was founded in 1827 by a European family, the Scherervilles. The first settler in what is now Schererville was John Scherer, who came to the area in 1827. By 1830, there were six families living in the town. In 1836, Thomas Scherer bought land near present-day Schererville and began developing it into a small town. The first courthouse was built in 1840. In 1845, the town had only 12 residents and two stores. It wasn't until 1861 that Schererville became a full city and began to grow rapidly. In 1865, Schererville gained city status when it passed an act of Congress making it one of "the five cities of Indiana" allowed under state law during the Reconstruction Era. The city's official name was changed from 'Schererville' to 'Schererviile'. During this time, the population grew to over 200 people and its economy soared thanks to its location within easy reach of manufacturing plants and other businesses. The late 1800s saw growth for both Schererviile and nearby Bridgeport as well - with both towns becoming centerpieces of their respective counties' agriculture economies. This growth continued through World War II until Bridgeport's rapid expansion caused much competition for jobs within the larger city limits - which led to a gradual decline for Schererviile during that period as well (although still significant economically). However, beginning in the 1990s, Slowly but surely things beganto change for both towns as they experienced dramatic changes brought on by technological advances: mobile phone use made communication more Invisible than ever before; online shopping gave local merchants an edge over those located miles away; suburban development sprawled outwards across rural areas; while all around them real estate prices skyrocketing...all making life difficult for smaller towns like Schererviile that are struggling against larger cities with more resources at their disposal...But miraculously...through sheer will power & passion these hardworking little villages have pulled themselves together & rebuilt not just their downtowns but also their libraries,...our parks & civic spaces...sound ministries & creative arts programs
