Schererville is a town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Putnam County. The name comes from Nicholas Scherer, who settled in what is now Schererville in 1837. The first post office was established in Schererville on December 12, 1839. The first store opened its doors on September 11, 1840. In 1853 the first railroad station opened at Schererville. By 1870 there were ten stores and six saloons in Schererville. In 1932 the last store closed down and all of its products were sold online or through catalogues until it reopened as an antique store in 1978 under new management and ownership until it closed again in 2006 due to economic difficulties. In 1933 there was a one-night benefit performance by Glenn Miller at the Hollywood Palladium which helped raise money for local charities including the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries of Indiana which still work together today within Schererville Township limits to this day! The post office closed on October 15th of that year due to lack of customers with no plans made to reopen until 1942 when a new post office was built just east of town on Harrison Road near Hiwassee Lake/Purdue University farmington Hills Campus as part of what would become known as "Old Town" Schererville development area!
The first settlers in Schererville, Indiana were James and Nancy Henson. They started a farm on the current site of Union High School in 1819. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died during the Mexican-American War. In 1838, Schererville became a part of the Butler County seat when that county was created from parts of Hendricks and Clay counties. The first post office in town was established in 1839. In 1870, the population of Schererville reached 1,500 people. By 1909, the population had increased to 10,000 people. The first school in town was built in 1841 and it served as a training ground for local farmers until it closed in 1951. During World War II, Schererville served as an Army airfield whereAAF pilots flew missions over Germany and Austria. After the war ended, the community saw an influx of refugees from Europe which caused some problems such as limited housing availability and high unemployment rates for natives born within America In 1957, Schererville became home to its own airport which helped spur growth during that decade. It also played host to several international conferences during that time including those held at Purdue University Pavilion overlooking downtown Schererville Since becoming a city status charter city on November 17th 1999 by then Mayor Tom Taylor with unanimous passage by City Councilmembers Lynn Kappelman (2nd Ward), Janice Sheehan (3rd Ward), Rochelle Sawaya (4th Ward) & Lisa DeVries (5th Ward), real property tax increase measure approved on February 28th 2000 raise total assessed value to $128 million effective July 1st 2000Schererville is now one of 5 cities/towns within Metropolitan Indianapolis only dependent on voter approval for any new taxes or services expansions other than police or fire protection
