Richmond, Indiana is a city in southern Indiana. It was founded in 1847 and has since grown to be the fifth-largest city in the state. The city is located on the banks of the Ohio River, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Indianapolis. The population of Richmond was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2010.

Richmond, Indiana is one of the most populated places in the state of Indiana. The population was estimated at over 100,000 in 2010, and it is projected to grow even more in the near future. Richmond has a rich history that is reflective of its present day. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Richmond were French Jesuits who arrived in 1768. They were followed by Germans who came around 1800. The area that now makes up Richmond was part of British India until 1947, when it became an independent country called India. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne founded the city of Richmond on the east side of the Wabash River. It was named for George Washington’s father-in-law, James Robertson (1724-1802). Wayne had served as a general under Washington during the Revolutionary War and saw action at Saratoga and Yorktown. He wanted to show his appreciation to Robertson by naming a town after him. The first post office in Virginia was established at Richmond on September 8, 1814, with Jules Thibault as its first occupant. By 1840, there were six post offices within easy reach of Virginia Beach where people could send mail without having to leave their homes or go through customs inspections. In 1845, Postmaster General Amos Kendall renamed all these posts “Richmond” because he believed that this name would be more popular than those given to towns located close to larger cities like Petersburg or Norfolk. Thanks to Kendall’s initiative and efforts by local residents, Richmond grew rapidly from its small population of about 25 people in 1850 to nearly 120 people by 1860! Although many national leaders used Petersburg as their winter capital during the years before they moved into Washington D.C., only two presidents – Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S Grant – lived permanently here: Johnson from 1865–1869 and Grant from 1877–1881 (Johnson left after being impeached). During Reconstruction following World War II “the war years” (1946–1953), Petersburg reverted back to being a small town while downtown thrived with new development including several large shopping malls which developed adjacent to then Roman Catholic Stritch University which later became known as Purdue University; today’s nearby Interstate 65 corridor forms much of its radial arterial design pattern today!

After the war, Richmond experienced a decline in population due to industrialization and suburban development. However, it has since regained some of its former glory as a leading American city.
