Richmond, Indiana is located in the northwest corner of the state of Indiana. It is bordered by Wabash River to the north, Vincennes to the east, andCass County to the south. The population was 2,815 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Richmond was James Ritchie who arrived in 1797. Richard Duryea and John Thornton also came early in this century. In 1814, David Barlow donated land for a school system in Richmond which opened on November 1st that year. By 1840, Richmond had a population of 592 people and it became an incorporated town on October 27th of that year. On December 3rd of that year, it passed a charter amendment creating a city government with its own mayor and council members as well as its own police force and fire department. On January 25th of 1847 City Hall was dedicated and marked as one of America's earliest municipally-owned buildings by President George Washington himself! In 1865, Richmond became part of newly formed Cass County when that county was created from parts of Wabash and Vincennes counties. On February 14th 1870 Jno Brisbin organized a men’s militia company named “The Virginia Regiment” which he called “the most efficient body ever raised for defense against Indians or any other enemy” On November 15th 1870 voting began for incorporation into what would become known as “The City Of Richmond” In 1916a new brick courthouse replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire two years earlier In 1924 another new brick courthouse replaced an older structure which had also been destroyed by fire three years earlier A large municipal garage now stands along side Main Street within easy walking distance von Railway Station

Richmond, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana and is the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first white settlers in Richmond were James Hartsfield and his wife Elizabeth (née Smith). They arrived in 1814 and built a cabin on a stream called Pigeon Creek near what is now downtown Richmond. In 1820, they moved to what is now west side of town and began to build a log cabin on an acreage they purchased from Nicholas Metcalfe. Their home became known as "The Big House". In 1830, James Hartsfield's son John married Anna Maria Sale who had come over with him from Kentucky when he was appointed sheriff of Bourbon County,Indiana Territory. AnnaMaria was from a family of landowners in that area and her father had been one of the founders of Lafayette Township along Delaware River in present day Butler County,Indiana Territory. When John Hartsfield died childless in 1832, his widow sold her interest in their farmstead to Joseph Catterson for $2 per acre ($40 total) Anna Maria Catterson continued to live there until her death in 1900. In 1837-38 another group of pioneers led by David Sibley came through Marshall County looking for land to settle after leaving their post as surveyors during the Jackson Purchase Land Grant period (). They located what is today south side east corner lot number 9 on High Street between Brown & Meridian Streets/Richmond Cemetery/Catterson farmstead (now known as "Old Joe's"). There are various stories about where this lot originally stood or why it was chosen for settlement but all agree that it would have eventually ended up near Catterson Farmstead because its location afforded easy access to water supplies which would have been important for growing crops and raising livestock nearby; also close by were several churches which would have served both rural residents as well as those living closer to larger towns such as Logansport or Danville who could travel downriver for services. After settling here they raised some cattle, pigs, goats etc., until 1800 when they started marketing their product saltwater products back upstream at what is now called "Salt Lick" northeast corner lot number 10 on High Street just southwest of East Market Square Some early recollections mention being able to trade Indian corn meal powder for saltpeter so Trading Post may have been earlier than first thought! By 1840s most Richmondians were farmers growing cornmeal while others produced hay, cottonseed oil etc., dependent upon local rainfall conditions making irrigation necessary
Richmond was founded in 1785 by General George Washington as a military post on the east side of the Ohio River. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest settlements in what is now Indiana. The area became an important commercial center, and early industries included lumbering and woollen spinning. In 1814, Richmond was incorporated as a city and soon began to become known for its rich history and architecture. it played a significant role in both the American Revolution and the Civil War. In 1865, Richmond was captured by Confederate forces during the war and lost much of its population, including many of its wealthy merchants and politicians. After the end of the war, Richmond regained some of its former prominence as a manufacturing center but experiencedDecline during Reconstruction. Today, it remains a small town with few permanent residents.
