Richmond, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Richmond County, Indiana, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Richmond County was made on October 6, 1812 by General David Wilkinson and his company as part of the Treaty of Fort Wayne. In 1814, James Caldwell established a post on which he named it Caldwellsville after himself and his parents. A year later, Wilkinson erected a log cabin near where present day State Road 7 crosses White River to serve as its first courthouse. At this time, there were only about twenty people living in what is now Richmond County. In 1828, General Anthony Wayne's brigade attacked and captured Fort Dearborn from the British Army under Lieutenant Colonel John Aspinwall without bloodshed or combat. This event helped start what would become known as suburban growth around downtown Indianapolis due to increased demand for military supplies from nearby Detroit and other cities during the 1830s American Civil War (the war was fought primarily in states east of Ohio). The town that developed around this new military supply center became known as Fort Wayne. In 1835, when Stroudsburg began to grow rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Mononoke River—and because it had been exempted from Ulysses S Grant's order to add slavery into their state Constitution—Richmond County decided not to join forces with Stroudsburg and remained an abolitionist stronghold until well into the 1860s when most southern Indiana counties followed suit; however some communities like Crown Point did hold anti-slavery meetings even before this trend began developing statewide. In 1861–1865 two battles took place within Richmond County: one battle occurred at Greencastle on December 12th 1861 during Confederate Major General Alexander Pakenham's attempt to march through Richmond County towards Louisville while another battle took place about three miles southeast of present day Petersburg on April 9th 1865 between Union troops commanded by Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer and Confederate cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel JF Pettit Jr.. Both battles resulted in significant loss for both sides with over fifty killed/murdered/disappeared including nine Confederate Generals including Pakenham himself; almost all members of Cavalry unit involved were executed afterwards according to local legend . After these events many farms abandoned their land around Petersburg because they could no longer afford taxes or provide food for their families during Reconstruction days when black Americans were still considered second-class citizens throughout much of America based off race rather than educational qualifications or accomplishment;; however several small businesses continued operating until today despite discrimination against them by many individuals who erroneously believe that African Americans can't be successful in white society

It became an important center for trade and commerce during the 19th century. In 1814, Richmond was incorporated as a city and soon became known for its fine architecture and engineering achievements. The city experienced significant growth during the American Civil War, with both sides occupying the city for brief periods of time. After the war, Richmond began to decline as a commercial center until it regained some of its former prominence in the 20th century.
