In 1811, Richmond was founded as a post office on the banks of the Wabash River. The town grew rapidly and by 1827 it had become an agricultural center with a population of over 100. By 1870, Richmond had reached its peak as an industrial center with a population of over 1,500. By 1930, however, Richmond's economy had declined and the town lost its status as a major city. However, during the early 21st century, Richmond has begun to experience growth in the form of new businesses and residences. In 2003, Richmond became an annex of Indianapolis and now lies within the city limits of both cities.

Richmond, Indiana is a small city in southern Indiana. The population was 8,853 at the 2010 census. Located on the north side of the state, Richmond is one of the most rural cities inIndiana. It has a rich history dating back to 1812 when it was founded as a trading post by General David Dixon and his troops during the War of 1812. In 1830, Richmond became an independent municipality and voted to secede from Indiana. However, this vote was vetoed by then-Gov. Matt Bevin and Richmond remained an unincorporated community until 1926 when it became part of the newly formed City of Indianapolis. The roots of Richmond’s history can be found throughout its area where Native American people lived for centuries before white explorers arrived in search of new land to explore and settle. The first settlers in what is now Richmond were Hugenots who came overland from France in 1685. They quickly established themselves as farmers and traders along the Great Lakes region before moving westward into what is now eastern Indiana in 1718 with their brother-in-law Pierre Antoine Cadillac. From here they began settling down near present day Richmond on land that had been granted them by treaty with native chief Potawatomi leader Little Turtle. By 1800, there were more than 100 French Canadian families living in what is now east central Indiana including many who had settled around Petersburg (now Evansville). In 1812 General David Dixon negotiated a peace treaty between Britain and Tecumseh’s forces after Battle of Fort Dearborn which ended hostilities between British America and America’s Indian allies; specifically Creek Indians led by Miami Chief Osage Apaches seeking total independence from both England and Spain after years of war against both nations combined under one banner known as “the United States Of North America” (USA). Aftermath of battle resulted in large number dead English soldiers/tribesmen & civilians as well as extensive damages done to infrastructure along Detroit River watershed including navigation channels used for commerce & transportation linking Lake Huron to Atlantic Ocean (& Canada) while also eliminating major source for food for Native Americans located within 200 miles radius including those living near Petersburg & Evansville due to lack thereof access to fresh water supplies following battle aftermath; thus beginning process whereby First Nations peoples gradually assimilated into mainstream cultures through cultural practices such as Christianity, trade goods gained thru contact with European colonists instead & residential areas gradually grew denser populated nearer rivermouth providing

In 1814, the town of Richmond became a county seat when it was combined with other counties in the region. On January 4, 1835, the Indiana statehood referendum passed with 71% of the vote to become a state. The county seat shifted to Indianapolis in 1837 and remained that way until 1965 when it switched to Richmond as part of the consolidation of neighboring Vigo and Clearfield Counties intothe new Kokomo County.
