In 1825, Richmond was founded by General John Hancock in order to protect the Indiana Territory from British encroachment. The town quickly became a center for local gun culture and shooting, with several ranges existing within its boundaries at the time. By 1870, Richmond had become one of the most important shooting destinations in Indiana, hosting annual rifle and shotgun matches as well as western pistol tournaments. In 1904, the city hosted its first modern indoor range, which helped make Richmond an even more popular shooting destination for both novice shooters and experienced alike. Throughout its history, Richmond has been home to many iconic local firearms manufacturers including Colt Firearms Company (1895-1902), Savage Arms Manufacturing Company (1907-1970), Winchester Repeating Arms Company (1920-1928), Remington Arms Corporation (1930-1986), Browning Firearms Corporation (1936-2006) and Stevens & Sons Gunsmithing/Gunnery Supply Co. (1880-1966). This rich firearm history is also reflected in the number of handguns that have been manufactured in Richmond over the years - nearly 60% of all pistols made in America were made here during this time period. Richmond, Indiana is a small town located in the eastern portion of the state of Indiana. The population was 4,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute– Evansville metropolitan area. Richmond is known for its nightlife and its many creative businesses and organizations. The first people to live in what is now Richmond were Native Americans who hunted game in the area until 1814 when they were driven out by white settlers. In 1829, Richmond was platted as a village by General David Hunter and his brother-in-law, John Swayne. In 1830, Richmond became an incorporated city with a population of 753. The city was renamed for James Robertson, 3rd Viscount Dunmore after he helped lead Indian Wars against federal forces on behalf of Indian Chief Tecumseh. In 1847, Samuel Morse established Richmond's first post office in what is now downtown. A year later, he built a store on Main Street that served as the nucleus for today's downtown business district. By 1850, there were over 100 businesses in downtown Richmond including stores such as Smith & Wesson (now Sigma Nu fraternity), Fidelity & Company (now JCPenney), and Gibbs Millinery School (now The Nixon Library). In 1856, James Robertson purchased land east of present day Downtown Richmond from Henry Clay Frick and began construction on what would become known as "the White House". After completing construction in 1861-1862, President Abraham Lincoln visited the project while making his way down Pennsylvania Avenue en route to Ford Motor Company's plant north of Washington D.C.. When it was announced that Lincoln would not be re-elected due to Thirteenth Amendment victory over slavery just days before his inauguration, workers broke into tears at "the White House" because no new president could be inaugurated without taking office at 5 P.M., which would have resulted in Confederate Vice President Andrew Johnson becoming interim president until a new president could be elected during the next day's mourning period! The building served various purposes following its completion including being used by both local government entities such as Township Council meetings and then by newly formed Indianapolis City Council meeting before finally being sold to Hoosier National Bank for $225K back in 1966! However despite all this history/use none of it has been preserved or even touched since then! remarkably only 1% or so remains remaining from when it originally functioned! All but 10% still stands unharmed physically inside even though most has rotted through over time leaving virtually nothing standing besides spindles and nails still protruding from once beautiful wood floors!
