In 1861, Confederate General Joe Hooker's army invaded Indiana and marched through Mercer County destroying many homes and businesses as they went along before stopping at Richmond for dinner at Mr. Dyer's house on Main Street where he met local dignitaries including Governor Taney which helped give him momentum for invading Kentucky later that year On November 14th 1861, General Joseph Hooker (CSA) surrendered at Appomattox Court House Virginia which ended the Civil War in America Richmond got its own post office in 1865 which continued until 1971 . On July 9th 1870, Richmond lost its status as county seat when Woodford County was established within Butler County . The first election held after Woodford County establishment took place on November 3rd 1870 with James Witherspoonelected as mayor
