Lubricants like gun oil were developed specifically for percussion cap rifles and were often composed of vegetable oils such as sesame seed or cottonseed oil (Ferguson). Gun oils had to meet specific requirements such as being highly resistant to oxidation and having low reactivity with metals (Goudreau-Lacoueix). These properties made them ideal for use on high-piston firearms like percussion cap rifles which relied on large amounts of air pressure to fire projectiles. As technology progressed during the 20th century, both firearm lubricants and ammunition began becoming more difficult to come by. Ammunition shortages led to increased demand for lubricants intended specifically for artillery weapons systems such as machine guns and cannons (Ferguson 710ff.). Lubricants became increasingly important because they allowed artillery units access to precision gunfire without needing cumbersome cartridges or other delivery methods.
