Richmond, Indiana is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–McClaren Metropolitan Statistical Area. Richmond was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and named for General Lafayette. The first post office opened in 1815. In 1827, Richmond became a town and was renamed after General Robert E. Lee. Richmond was annexed by Terre Haute in 1892 and has since been known as the "City of Randolph". The history of Richmond begins with its location on the Scioto River on land that had been claimed by both French and English Settlers before it became part of Indian Territory under the Treaty of Chase-Natchez in 1796. In 1800, President George Washington granted to Joseph Whitehead 640 acres (2 km²) along the Scioto River which he designated as "Richmond Township." Whitehead built a log cabin here and soon began trading with Indians for goods such as deer meat and flour from their hunting grounds upstream on the Ohio River. In 1814, General James Wilkinson established what would become known as "Richmond" after General Lafayette while living on Kentucky's side of the river near where modern day Indianapolis is located. After Wilkinson's death in1815, his widow took over his property including this area now within present day Richmond Township according to an official plat from 1830 which shows 6 miles (10 km) north east of what is now downtown Indianapolis off I-465/US-24 south across from Green Lawn Cemetery Charleston Road). A year later in 1826 when Randolph became a town within Hendricks County it changed its name to Richmond due to advances being made by then Mayor John Capps who felt that it resembledGeneral Robert E.-Lee who had died two years earlier at Appomattox Court House during fought against British forces during America's War for Independence under Tennessee Governor Hasleton Johnston who also served as Commander-in-Chief American Forces southern Europe theater...In order to commemorateGeneralRobertELee’s death we organized services at Green Lawn Cemetery “A Monument To Robert Elee” were Reverend JH Stephenson officiated with music supported by Dr Henery Sargent played organ & Phebe Wellborn Singer having sung before at home while Mrs Geo W Long preached…On October 15th 1920 Rev Stephenson conducted service attended by many local dignitaries including Mayor Abramson Knight Chairman Of The Board Of Trustees Post Office Company Commissioners etcetera
