In 1851, Richmond, Indiana became the capital of the new United States of America. The city had been founded by General David R. Cook and his family in 1839 as a stop on the Oregon Trail. Cook was interested in fur trade and developed a business trading goods with the First Nations people who inhabited what is now Canada. In 1847, he married Mary Elizabeth Ross and moved to Richmond to take up his new post as commissioner of Indian Affairs. During the American Civil War, Richmond sided with the Union side. On April 12th 1861, Confederate forces attacked General David Dixon’s Union brigade at Petersburg Road Bridge near present-day New Albany. Three days later, Confederate troops sacked Richmond before retreating back into Georgia. The attack on Richmond solidified south Alabama’s support for secession from the United States and helped to spur efforts among southern whites to form their own government. When hostilities ended in 1865, many soldiers from Virginia returned home or were sent north to provide military support for Reconstruction policies in newly acquired states such as Indiana (although some remain today). Many of these veterans settled in Richmond where they took up arms again against organized crime and other criminals during this time period. Richmond, Indiana is a small town in northern Marion County,Indiana, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Carmel–Anderson metropolitan area and it is served by the Richmond School District. In 1836, James Henshaw founded what would become Richmond as a stop on his ill-fated surveying expedition across central Indiana with surveyor John Roemer. In 1837, Roemer named what became Richmond in honor of General George Washington's home state of Virginia; however much earlier, James Henshaw had given this name to a location west of Petersburg in York County. Richmond first experienced significant growth when its boundaries were enlarged by Union land purchases in 1861 during the American Civil War. The town quickly became an important military supply center due to its strategic location along both routes connecting Detroit with points east and south. By 1865, Richmond had reached its peak as a commercial and industrial center with several sawmills, tanneries and flour mills dotting the landscape. Thanks to these businesses and others that developed around it during this time period such as banks (the first being First National bank) grocery stores ( Mercantile store built in 1865), hotels (Best Western hotel built in 1865) and schools (Richmond High School was established in 1868), Richmond remained one of the most vibrant communities on the Central Indiana Frontier for many years to come. During World War II, Richmond played an important role as a munitions plant producing shells for allied forces fighting in North Africa and Europe. The plant closed following hostilities but remains notable for its contribution to Indianapolis' post-war rebirth as an economic powerhouse thanks primarily to new companies that emerged from within the plant itself such as JBL Enterprises Inc., now known as Beats Electronics Incorporated . Afterward, Randolph began experiencing rapid growth which culminated with the construction of Interstate 65 through town between I-465 and Ulysses S Grant Boulevard circa 1990 which helped spur increased development including numerous high-rise buildings including One hundred thirty floors tower called "The Bellevue" located adjacent to Gateway Mall today still standing although derelict since 2006 due to codes changes necessitated by current zoning laws governing office/residential development; while also providing much needed street connectivity between various neighborhoods throughout downtown Randolph despite some concerns over sprawl - presently making it one of Indy's most walkable cities
