Portage, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is located in Portage Township and is part of the Wabash Valley School District. The first permanent settler in what would become Portage County was Nicholas Venable, who arrived in 1788. By 1814, the county had been organized into four townships: Albion, Bloomington-Normal, Decatur and Pittsfield. In 1847, the township of Portage became a separate section of the new county. During World War II, many men from nearby Fort Wayne served in the military here. Notable citizens include General George Smedley Butler (1915-2006), founder and CEO of Apache Corporation; Admiral Chester Nimitz (1920-2008); Mayor Tom Feehan (1974-2002). Today, Portage's economy revolves around agriculture and tourism. Agriculture includes corn, soybeans and other crops; fishing including bass & catfish tournaments on three rivers near downtown; golfing with nine holes on Calumet Lake; horseback riding; skiing or snowboarding at resorts close by; and dog sledding on White River adjacent to town limits. The early settlers were successful in growing grain that was transported to Indianapolis for market sale. Today about 78% of all agricultural production takes place within one mile of Portage proper – mostly cornmeal and feedlots for cows and pigs as well as hayseed storage yards for bison winter feeding purposes only! Many local businesses are still family run with an emphasis on service excellence – from caterers to carpenters to plumbers! A variety of arts/crafts abound: pottery making being especially popular among women during different parts of the year;itherfolk dancing several times per week at various venues throughout town while tourists are visiting – most often Main Street’s Farmers Market where fresh produce is available along with prepared foods such as pies or pastries made by home cooks! There’s also a library which opened its doors in 1922 after years of planning by then Mayor Tom Feehan along with then Trustee Harry Heckerstrom! And finally there are numerous restaurants serving up average American cuisine right off Main Street whether it be Chinese takeout or steak houses complete with extensive gardens forUTF8 dining 😉

Portage is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Washington-Lafayette Canal and is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Portage were French fur traders in 1688. The area was first settled by Native Americans, including the Potawatomi and Shawnee. The first European to settle in what is now Portage was George Rogers Clark in 1792. In 1803, a group of Englishmen led by Major John Partridge founded Fort Dearborn on the east bank of the Washington-Lafayette Canal. In 1810, General James Kippenberger laid out a township for residents of Lafayette Township on land that had been donated by Pierre Beauregard during his military campaigns against Joseph Shelby and others in central Indiana.numbered as Portage Township 1 through 4 until it was merged into Hancock County in 1903. The original village of "Portage" was located on a bend in the Ottawa River just north of present day downtown Lafayette; it consisted of only one house and some log structures dating back to before 1800s. By 1830, however, there were five or six houses with gardens and several acres (ha) of cornfields within what are now downtown Lafayette; also near this time two stores (one called Slocum's store after its founders), a post office (1830), four churches (Anglican, Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterian/Congregationalist and Baptist), three blacksmith shops (including Oneida Forge & Iron Works from 1811 - 1865), two sawmills (Fisher Bros./Reed Brothers operated from about 1830 until 1860) and three stores all serving different parts of town: Gifford's store at corner Main street westward from Center block across from courthouse; Storey's store opposite east side Second street between Court blocks southward from centerblock westward; Mrs." Storey's House" northeast corner Second Street eastward from Center block northward next door to Gifford’s house; finally Post Office built southeast corner Third Street eastward from Center block northwest toward canal
Portage, Indiana was founded in 1837 by the brothers Joseph and James H. Portage. The town quickly became a thriving center for trade and commerce. In 1845, the first school was built in Portage. By 1850, the town had a population of about 150 people. In 1856, the first post office was established in Portage. The town continued to grow and become more popular until it lost its status as an important commercial center during the American Civil War. After the war, Portage slowly regained its former importance as a community with a growing population. In 1924, the old downtown section of Portage was destroyed by a fire which left many buildings standing but no significant evidence remaining of what had once been its cultural and economic significance.
