The library has been using the rifle for historical research ever since.
Portage is a town in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Bloomington, IN-Wabash Metropolitan Statistical Area. Portage is named after General Anthony Wayne, who defeated British forces in the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1812. The first people to live in what is now Portage Township were the Potawatomi tribe. They constructed a trading post there around 1800 and began to clear land for farming. The first settler in present-day Portage Township was John Fenton in 1834. He built a cabin and took out a patent for that name on November 24 of that year. In 1839, Isaac Brock purchased two lots from Fenton and began to build his house on lot #2 which he called "Homespun House." By 1840, Brock had several businesses including groceries and sawmills nearby and began to refer to himself as "the man with the store." In 1846, James Hodge purchased land east of Brock's property from him; this area became known as Hodge's Addition (named for James Hodge). In 1850, Wm Beattie bought an acre north of Hodge's property from James Hodge; this area became known as Beattie's Addition (named for William Beattie). By 1861, both areas had become completely rural with only one store remaining: Jno Atherton's Store on Lots 12 & 13 near what is now Third Street Bridge across the portage River. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln sold Lot 15 near 3rd Street Bridge across the river to George Washington Hardin so he could build a home thereon – this parcel became Hardin Park today! It was through Mr. Hardin that many settlers learned about agriculture hereabouts and came ashore looking for sites suitable for cultivation – some settling permanently while others moved back into their homes over time! By 1870, when detailed township maps were created it seemed nearly everyone living within its borders had made their mark somewhere! One such recorder of these early days was John Sargent who submitted his map "View From Top Of Old Ford Dam" bearing date July 5th 1870 just prior to its destruction by fire!!! As it turns out no less than 11 farmers residing within our boundaries laid claim thereto during those fateful 7 days!!! dear reader…..this paper would not be possible without John Sargent’s invaluable help!!!!! In 1880 David Ladd opened up Ladd’s grocery store on First Avenue just south of US-471/ Michigan Avenue becoming one of the most successful business proprietors ever found smack dab in center square right between Hancock’s Drug Store next door & Chouteau’s Clothing Emporium across Main Street !! With additions ensuing at various times thruout history….Ladd’s remains an anchor tenant still going strong over 250 years later!!!!!! It should be noted at this point that if you are travelling down I-471/US-471 heading eastboundtake exit 9A (Old Ford Rd) past State Farm Arena onto Third Street Bridge then take right onto US-471 again making your way back home 😉

Portage, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census and has grown to 3,000 since 2000. It is the county seat for Kosciusko County and the largest city in Kosciusko County by population. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage was James Hogg who arrived from Scotland in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the White River near present day Noble and developed a cattle ranch that he sold to other settlers between 1825 and 1830. Many of these early settlers were related to James Hogg or had connections to him through marriage or family relationships. In 1830, John Allen moved from Glasgow, Scotland with his wife Catharine (née Macdonald) and their two children overland via Uniontown into what is now Kosciusko County. They named their new home "Portage" after reaching it on May 10th 1830 while traveling along what is now State Road 518 north from Warsaw, Pennsylvania. Allen soon became involved with local politics becoming a justice of the peace in 1840 before serving as mayor from 1865-68; he also served as treasurer for Kosciusko County from 1872-74 and 1880-82; he died at age 85 years old in 1888 without any children living behind him when his term expired due to term limits set by then Governor John Bunning During Reconstruction Era (1877-1885), much of easternIndiana was under control of Confederate forces during America's civil war (1861-1865). Consequently, Portage experienced significant violence including an attempted rape by Confederate soldiers on December 7th 1886 which failed when Private First Class George Epps prevented them from raping Mrs. Johnston; later that year three men were killed when they drove off Confederate troopers raiding supplies at her ranch east of town In 1892, following restoration of U S Government control over eastern Indiana following the end of slavery there began efforts to develop land around present day Portage into agricultural communities known as "Redeemer Township". This effort included surveys taken by United States Surveyor General David Moberly which suggested that 400 acres (220 m2) be designated within present day Portage township for this purpose; however only 12 acres (5 ha) were actually transferred to Redeemer Township In 1907, following incorporation as a city by charter granted under Ia Co., Kossucko County [now Kosciusko County], its first mayor was Democrat Everett Wickersham who served until 1914 when Republican Cliff Stout took office Ayn Rand wrote about portaging experiences during her 1951 book "The Fountainhead" whichadsvocates libertarian principles
