The Portage Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1903. The primary purpose of the club was to provide shooting protection for members of the community. In 1934, a new clubhouse was built on North Main Street in Portage, Indiana. This building served as the club’s headquarters until it burned down in 1954. The current building, which is located on South Main Street, was constructed in 1966 and is used by the club as a banquet hall. As with any other Shooting Sport Activity there are always those who try to restrict or prohibit this type of activity altogether- primarily those who have never taken part before or those who only know about it through Hollywood movies or television shows that promote safety measures instead of fun and excitement. For many years now shooters from all over the United States have gathered together at various events to take part in what has become known as “The Open Air Shooter” Championship event series held every year at different locations around the country. These championships offer an opportunity for all levels of shooter to compete against each other without fear of injury or damage done during their endeavors. Portage is a small town in thewestIndiana county of Posey. The post office, which was established in 1872, is located in the town. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,382. The Portage community takes its name from General George Washington figures who fought at the Battle of Fort Dearborn in 1790. The first settler in what is now Portage was Abram Capps who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1814. He built a cabin on an east-west road that later became known as State Highway 3. Other early settlers included John Steamer and his family who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1825 and erected a log cabin on the present day dragoon Road. The first stores were opened near where they are still open today by Hemanus Pyle and Gershom Coffin respectively. In 1830, Isaac Dunham founded Dunham Bros grocery store and restaurant along Main Street which remain open to this day as one of downtown Portage's oldest businesses! A post office called "Portage" was established at this location on November 15, 1872, by James Fenton with Arita Post Office No. 2 having been established two weeks earlier on October 20th). The original building still stands adjacent to United Methodist Church (built 1907), across from First National Bank (1901) and just south of current day US Marshals Service Building (2007). In 1912 Antioch Baptist Church organized a church plantation west of town and soon there were churches throughout northeast Indiana operated by church members or their families! In 1925 local blacksmith George Hinton opened his own shop providing quality metal work services for many years until it closed down around 1990 due to heavy competition! As more people moved into town during prohibition era some formed their own gangs/ crews engaging primarily in alcohol smuggling/ brawling knowing that law enforcement would not pursue them since doing so would risk getting themselves arrested as well! In 1951 when voting finally became available for residents within portage township over 50% defaulted so voting never occurred again until 1958 when incorporation took place making it an official village! On July 4th 1959 new Village Hall was dedicated with service being provided daily by Mrs. Grace Snyder! In 1978 Wacoal Incorporated merged with other companies forming Synovar HealthCare Corporation; however Synovar continued providing quality health care services through another company until 2003 before ceasing operations completely due to financial limitations! Today only physical health insurance remains providing coverage for nearly everyone within downtown Portage while real estate interests maintain much ofSynovar's business infrastructure; including its headquarters off Main Street where management currently meets quarterly to discuss continuing operations

PORTAGE, INDIANA - In the early 1800s, Indiana was a sparsely populated territory. However, with the opening of the Ohio River in 1825 and the beginning of heavy European settlement in what is now Portage County, much activity took place. The first permanent settlers in what is now Portage County were French Canadian traders who started arriving in 1795. By 1810, there were about 20 families living here. The area that would eventually become Portage County was part of Washtenaw County until it wasorganized as a separate county in 1831. The population for the first year of countyhood was only 10 people. The early years were quite prosperous for those who decided to move to this new land. But by 1850, things had changed drastically. The opening of the railroad system made farming more accessible and also brought cheap labor needed for construction projects such as railroads and schools. This increased competition drove prices down, which left many farmers unable to maintain their businesses or keep up with technological advances. Meanwhile, a small group of men – some fromamped central Indiana – decided to take advantage of this situation and start open-air mining operations on what are today’s properties around mile post 9 on US 23 near present day Greencastle Township (the town square once housed a courthouse). By 1861, portages between Clearwater Creek and Licking Fork had been built so miners could bring their ore directly into town without having to go through miles of waterfalls or other obstacles found elsewhere in the county. As these mines became more extensive and production increased, so too did social tensions within the community over wages and working conditions; one miner even went so far as to write an open letter opposing price gouging by his employers at mills downstream! 2 Open-air mining operations continued until 1865 when all mine sites were closed due to lack of available ore; however local farmers continued using lode coal mined nearby at Rockport Coal Company until 1903 when that company merged into American Coal Company
Portage is a town in and the county seat of Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Posey County was David Forney in 1814. He built a cabin on Indian Creek about two miles west of present-day Portage. Forney's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Posey County. In 1825, George Washington Carver founded Carverville in present-day Posey County to promote agriculture in this new land grant. In 1836, John Capps and his brother James established White Sulphur Springs on White Sulphur Creek about six miles east of modern day Portage. This became one of the early centers for medicinal plants and mineral production in this part of Indiana Territory. In 1840, Joshua Hensley platted what is now downtown Portage on land that he had purchased from David Forney near his original cabin site. This was followed by other settlements throughout the years including Carverville (1841), White Sulphur Springs (1842), and Centerport (1845). On December 12, 1850, Potts Land Company sold 2 square miles (4 km²) north of today's downtown Portage to Caleb Dickey for $2 per acre ($100 per hectare). This opened up much larger land grants which were eventually organized into counties through state legislation during the mid-19th century: Posey County on March 3, 1861; Marion County on November 10, 1865; Hendricks County on February 14, 1889; Tippecanoe County on November 5th 1907; etc.). Portage experienced significant growth following its incorporation as a town in 1903 when it became home to over 1,500 residents with an annual payroll totaling $40 million dollars! Today’s downtown skyline owes much to its location within minutes’ walk of many major cultural attractions such as Indiana State University – Bloomington and The Ballad Museum/Indiana State Fairgrounds!
