Portage, Indiana is a small town in the heart of the state of Indiana. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hoosier Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Portage has been inhabited for over three miles by Native Americans and their European predecessors. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Portage County were French traders in 1672 when they reached what is now Evansville from Illinois via the Wabash River. They named their discovery "Portage" after one of their number, Pierre-Jacques La Salle. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Michigan and found Indian villages along the Wabash River waiting for them. encamped near present day Lafayette were some 4,000 Shawnees and Senecas under Chief Joseph Brantley who had traveled downriver from Canada with his brother David Brant to meet Jackson as an envoy requesting help against Tecumseh's Rebellion in Ohio and Indiana. After learning about British intentions he led his people across the river into present day NorthwesternIndiana Territory to join forces with Tecumseh's forces at Vincennes which ended without incident on July 8, 1815 when General Jackson arrived with his army to relieve Fort Dearborn which was besieged by Tecumseh's forces following a failed attempt by General Hull to cross the river on July 4th using boats brought over from Canada). 1st Lt John Armstrong Jonas (1797-1871) also served during this period as aide de camp to Genl Andrew Jackson in Tennessee Valley Campaigns

Portage is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,640 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Portage were French traders in the early 17th century. The area now known as Portage was explored by American settlers in 1803 and named for George Washington's father-in-law and mentor, General James Wilkinson. After Wilkinson's death in 1807, his land passed through several hands until it came into the possession of General David Dixon in 1829. Dixon founded the city of Lafayette on what is now east side of town on land he had purchased from the federal government for $2 million dollars ($ today). In 1830, Fort Dearborn (later renamed Detroit) was built along the south side of three forks of the Potomac River about two miles north of present day Portage. When Fort Dearborn was abandoned during Indian Wars (1813-1816), some members of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition drove Indians out of their traditional hunting grounds around Dearborn Heights and established a trading post near modern day Grayslake Township northeast of present day Michigan City Junction on July 11, 1831 In December 1840, when Anthony Wayne became governor after defeating John Quincy Adams in a presidential election that year, he ordered all stores within one thousand feet (yards) or less along Michigan Street between First and Ninth Streets closed because prices for goods being sold there were so high compared to other locations within four miles radius outside Detroit The anti-agriculture movement began to gain prominence during this time with increased competition from imported corn made possible by improvements made to railroads throughout America thanks to Secretary Andrew Johnson's Department Of Agriculture
