Portage, Indiana is a town located in Van Wert County,Indiana. The population was 3,561 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitant of Portage Township was Nicholas Purdy in 1814. His grandson, John Purdy settled there in 1819 and his son-in-law James Dolan settled in 1825. In 1830 David Painter moved to Portage from Illinois and began to cultivate land there. He built the first house in what is now Portage Township on the old site of the present day Presbyterian Church building which he donated to that denomination. In 1833 Willard Sells bought land east of present day Porter Street from David Painter for $8 per acre and began to develop it into a farmers market known as "Sells' Market." That same year John Egan set up shop along Porter Street selling goods made locally such as flour, sugar beets, eggs and bacon. This early commercial enterprise was soon followed by others including a store operated by Solomon Decker on Main Street (later renamed Hargrave Avenue) in1837 which became one of the most important commercial areas in town until it closed its doors for good about 1870s when railroads took over transportation operations. A post office called "Portage" was established at this location on December 12,1846, but no mail was ever delivered to it because the route from Terre Haute via Indianapolis crossed through Rogers Road just south of town limits then continued onto US 45W just north of town limits before terminating atVan Wert County Lines near where current day State High School is located The first school district formed here was that controlled by private individuals with schools opened here between 1868-1875 led by Mrs Sarah Dudley who also served as Superintendent until her death State High School opened here on October 6th 1975

Portage, Indiana was first settled in 1814 by the Potawatomi Indians. The town was named after a small creek that ran through the area. The town's first store and post office were built in 1832. In 1837, the portage road between Portage and Dearborn was opened to traffic. In 1853, the village of Portage was founded on land donated by Judge Daniel Wicker. In 1865, the village of Dearborn was established on land donated by Judge John Dickey. By 1889, both villages had merged into the city of Portage. The city was renamed Portage in 1914 after its founder, Arthur Cushman Mott Jr., became mayor of the city Limits district. By 1976, all of Portagel limits except for one block (northwest corner) had been annexed into the city limits of Indianapolis.
Portage was a small town in central Indiana, United States. The original settler's name is unknown, but it is likely that the first permanent residents were the Lewis family who came to what is now Portage in 1819. In 1832, the town was renamed after General George Washington Ford and his forces fought in the Mexican-American War at Chapultepec Hill. It had a population of about 100 people by 1835. A post office was established at Portage in 1836, and soon became an important center for trade with nearby Elkhart, Michigan. In 1861, when Confederate troops invaded Indiana during the American Civil War, many of the local farmers sided with Union troops and fled to neighboring Illinois. By 1865, however, most of the population had returned to Portage. After the war ended in 1865, many small businesses closed down because of lack of money and competition from larger cities around Indianapolis. However, some entrepreneurs such as Wm Henson started new businesses in portages during Reconstruction period which helped revive the town during this time period
