Holsters have been around for many centuries, and Portage, Indiana is home to one of the oldest holster businesses in the United States. The first holster business on this property was opened in 1854 by two German immigrants, Johann Christoph Keller and Wilhelm Koller. It was called the Koller Holster House. The company became known as the Star-Buck holsters company after a 1942 advertisement in a trade journal featured an American soldier wearing a Star-Buck holster with success against Japanese forces during World War II. The holster name continues to be used today by some of the company’s customers. In 1911, John Prentice opened his own holster business in Chicago, Illinois. He offered holsters made from horsehide or leather and sold them through his stores and individuals. In 1922, Prentice moved his business to Portage and continued to sell holsters there until his death in 1978. His sons continued the business until it was acquired by Brownells Incorporated in 1990. Brownells continues to make holsters under their own brand today. Portage’s first handgun store was started by George Gillett in 1916. Gillett operated a small store at 502 N Main Street for about three years before he expanded into what is now the old Sears building on North First Street between State and Erie Streets (now occupied by Hennepin County government). Gillett also rented space at 3 S Harrison Street from Eberhard Weisselbach for storage purposes until he built his own pistol range there in 1929 which served as headquarters for both Store No 1 & 2 while they were located at 501 N Main Street & 5 S Harrison Street From 1933 bis 1939 Wm Chamberlin ran Store No 1 still operating out of Building 713N Main street just south of State Ave This building has been converted into apartments since then In 1938 Adolph Auerlein opened a weapons dealership/gunsmithing shop across from City Hall at 401 N South Main Street which became Auerlein Holsteins when it merged with Heller USA Corporation In 1940 Harry Jorgensen joined Heller USA Corp., becoming its President & CEO For thirty years Harry Jorgensen presided over HellerUSA Corp., one of America's leading firearms manufacturers After Harry Jorgensen's retirement HCM bought all assets (including parts) of HellerUSA Corp including 350 employees At HCM Weapons began operations located at 1224 Clinton Avenue Suite NW Minneapolis MN 55403 With Harry Jorgensen's departure from HellerUSA Corp., responsibility for all manufacturing passed completely hands to Fred Rose who had already been working on developing new products - finally making handguns available on November 15th 1945 Fred rose up through the ranks eventually becoming president of Cabela's Sporting Goods Company Since coming back into control ownership HCM has discontinued most manufacturing operations except for parts production currently taking place at their facility north Minneapolis

Portage is a town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Lake City, IN-KS Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in Portage was Levi Hutchins on December 5, 1814. He and his family were the first white people to set foot in what is now Putnam County when they settled on land near present day Columbus. Hutchins named the area "Portage" after his home port of Plymouth in England. In 1838, Isaac Griggs moved from Kentucky to start gristmills in what is now Portage and started a small grocery business there that grew into an major player in the community. In 1853, Griggs married Sarah Ivey and they started a second grocery store which continued to be successful until it closed its doors in 1925. The Ivey's are still celebrated locally for their contributions to this community by hosting annual Memorial Day picnic at their home every year since then! During World War II, many local businesses helped contribute to the war effort by manufacturing munitions or donating goods such as food or clothing. One such company was Hendrickson Manufacturing Company which made radios for military use and donated them to various allies during the war. The company still exists today as a private entity with headquarters located in Indianapolis The village of Portage had five stores when it incorporated on November 3, 1920; four of these stores operated independently under different names until 1933 when all were combined into one name: Hirschman's Fresh Market & Grocery Co.. Thereafter Hirschmans operated as one large store under several management changes before finally closing its doors on September 30th 1984 due to financial difficulties caused by competition from larger markets and lack of sales growth opportunities outside of Indiana.. For more than fifty years Hirschman’s had been providing quality groceries at competitive prices while also serving up fine dining experiences for customers who wanted something more than just groceries! In recent years much work has been done within town limits focusing on developing new economic opportunities including arts and culture initiatives like the recently founded local theatre group called 'The Playhouse' which offers professional Theatre programming as well as educational events/tours throughout the year for school groups and other interested individuals alike; as well as increasing access to green space through projects like improving infrastructure around town square (the former site of defunct bank) towards creating an open lawned park complete with visitor center/restaurant combo; while also working diligently towards redeveloping some older buildings within town limits into mixed-use structures that could house both commercial/residential uses AND additional cultural programs/events opportunely located within those buildings!

Portage, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Hardin County,Indiana, United States. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the I-65 corridor north of Indianapolis. The first permanent settler in what would become Portage was Nicholas Cockerill in 1814. He bought 5 acres (2 ha) of land from John Richardson for $100. In 1827, he married Susannah Bevier and founded the village of Hardin on what is now the southernmost edge of Portage City. They had six children and until his death in 1875, operated a tannery that produced leather goods for local merchants. His wife died in 1860 and he remarried Anna Pryor in 1862; they had two children before she died in 1888. In 1892, a group of businessmen led by George Hemenway purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of Indian land east of present day Hardin to build a new town called "Portage". The town was named after John Porter who donated land for it. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as many fugitive slaves were able to escape through its borders during the American Civil War. It also became known as a center for agricultural production due to its fertile soil and good water supply." The first post office was established at "Portage" on October 15th, 1893 by Mchael Ahern with Elisha Kincaid serving as his deputy postmaster general Atherton built several hundred homes around this time but only one remained standing until it burned down in 1945 After World War II there was much growth within Portage County due to manufacturing jobs coming back into America which attracted immigrants from all over Europe Today's city is home to some 6500 people making it one of the most diverse cities in Indiana
Portage, Indiana was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 18th century. The area was part of Fort Wayne until it was taken over by the United States in 1800. The town was organized on February 14, 1828, and named after Michael Portage, a member of the Fourth Regiment of Indiana Volunteers who helped lead an army against Great Britain during the War of 1812. In 1830, a bridge was built across the River La Salle at what is now known as Old Troy Road to connect Fort Wayne with nearby Plainfield. A post office and store were established in 1834 and remain open today. In 1840, $1,200 worth of goods were shipped through Portage on a ferry from Terre Haute to Indianapolis; this is considered to be the first commercial shipment through that route.
