Portage, Indiana is one of the oldest and most thriving cities in the United States. The city was founded on the banks of the Wabash River by French colonists in 1795. The name “Portage” comes from French meaning “bridge over water” because at that time this area consisted largely of marshland and swampy areas where navigation was difficult due to rapids and other obstacles. The first settlers were mainly farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes, oats, hay and other crops; however, later residents began building homes around what became known as "the Village." Today's buildings date back to the early 1800s when steamboats would come downriver loaded with goods such as cottonseed oil or lumber before continuing upriver for delivery

However, they have continued to be popular among computer enthusiasts and micro-manufacturers who need large quantities of specific chips or parts.

Portage, Indiana is located in the U.S. state ofIndiana and is the largest city in the county. The population was 61,810 at the2010 census. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 72,715. It was founded by Elisha Pratt in 1787 as a small trading post on the Great Lakes. Portage became an incorporated city within its own County on April 10, 1846 when it became one of twelve counties created by Indiana Territorial Legislature from parts of Northwest Michigan and southern Ohio following the US Civil War victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia Beach, Virginia The first white settlers arrived in what is now Portage County in 1787-1788 when Elisha Pratt (1727-1802) set up housekeeping on land he obtained along with other grants from French traders operating out side Detroit area which he named "Fenway" after his father-in-law Drury Fenway (1681-1751). He also built two log homes which remain standing today within present day downtowns of both cities; One near State Street and One near Fifth Avenue NW corner with Washington Street NW still standing today - these homes were added to National Register Historic Landmark listings in 1978 & 1986 respectively In 1814 General Anthony Wayne led American troops into battle against British forces during America's War for Independence at Battle Creek Bridge over White River just west of present day downtown Portage General Wayne's body lay unidentified until interment can be traced back to that date beneath Arlington National Cemetery east of Chicago where he rests alongside George Washington - both are honored there this current year . The site has been variously called Battle Creek Bridge or Old Fort Dearborn since those days Commodore John Denny’s shipping line anchored here between 1840s until about 1870 when new wharves were constructed upstream at Brownsville Landing further downriver but nothing remains today associated with that period or portaging activity During much later years due to lack of any other nearby major portaging point on either side of Lake Superior this area often served as a stopover for goods travelling downriver between Thunder Bay further south and La Crosse farther north before finally entering Canada via Menominee Falls just south Of Houghton Mifflinburg Wisconsin The first appearance mentionable map dated circa 1800 shows “Portage Pkwy” extending northeasterly from village center towards Muskegon Heights some 6 miles distant

Portage, Indiana was founded in 1824 by the General Assembly of the United States as a village on the Wabash River. The village was named for Major General Joseph Portage, who explored and surveyed the area. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1830, a schoolhouse and store were built in what is now downtown Portage. A Methodist church was built in 1833 and a tannery began operations in 1840. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Wabash River and its growing trade with surrounding counties. By 1850, there were businesses including a bank, grocery store, bakery, cotton gin, sawmill and flour mill. A railroad was constructed through town in 1855 and soon commerce flourished again. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Portage became an important Confederate munitions depot when it produced guns for General Ulysses S Grant’s army. In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate forces at Battle of Appomattox Court House, Portage became part of the new Indiana Territory. In 1870-71, it hosted a summer session of the United States Congress which met at Vincennes University before moving to Indianapolis that year. The population of Portage declined after World War II but has slowly recovered since 2000 thanks to annexations by other towns nearby such as New Albany and Fort Wayne. Today's downtown scene is home to several galleries and restaurants along with high-end shopping near Greenfield Mall which is also home to several banks and more than one hundred stores overall).
