In the early 1800s, Portage was a thriving town on the Indiana River. The area now known as Portage has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and the first Europeans to arrive in what is now Portage County were French colonists in 1679. In 1814, land west of present-dayPortage was annexed to present-day Lafayette Township, making it part of Lafayette County. In 1859, when the Illinois Central Railroad reached Portage from Chicago, settlers began moving into what is today Portage County. By 1870, there were more than 100 businesses in the town and it boasted a population of 1,500 people. Many of these businesses grew out of connections with railroad travel – one man built a store near the current courthouse because he knew that trains would stop at his property to buy goods brought downriver. The arrival of automobiles made life much harder for farmers who depended on horse-drawn carts to bring their food to market. As a result, some merchants began looking for ways to get arounders traffic congestion. One such businessman was James Haughton whose business became known as Haughton’s Store. In 1926, Haughton donated land above his store onto which modern day downtown Portage was built. Today, Portage is an important community not just because it’s home to many businesses but also because its history is so intertwined with that of the railroad system that passed through it and its citizens during times long ago.

The first gun target in Portage was a 20-pounder cannonball. It was built by John D. Rockefeller in 1873 and dedicated on October 14 of that year. The cannonball, which hit an apple tree nearby, became the town's first source of revenue from taxes levied on farmers and their livestock.
Portage, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville-Muncie-Portage, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Portage goes back to 1824 when a group of men from Kentucky purchased 4200 acres (1 km²) in what is now Portage County from Chief Wabash and his band of Shawnee Indians on behalf of General Andrew Jackson as part of the Treaty of Greencastle. In 1829, General Floyd Steele built a ferry crossing over the Ohio River at this location and named it after him, Steele Ferry Landing. The community began as a farming village with about sixty residents before becoming an agricultural center due to its location near major riverside crossings and its easy access to markets throughout central Indiana The first post office in Portage was established on December 15, 1837 by Isaac Bowen with P $5 postage stamps. At that time there were only two residences in town: One owned by Hemanus Beekman andthe other by Ebenezer Cooks. A store opened in 1841 which became known as “The Gilded Cage” for its beautiful gold-plated door knob . The first school was built in 1840 by Drury Brothers & Company under contract from the local government It didn’t take long for downtown Portage to become an important commercial center because it had close access to roads and railways which made it possible for goods to be transported quickly and efficiently

Portage, Indiana was an all-white community located in the southeast corner of what is now southern Indiana. The community was founded by General John Portage in 1812 as a trading post on the abandoned Miamisburg River. It became an all-white society and school system until it was disbanded in 1957.
