In 1958, the United States Army built a military reservation in what is now southern Portage Township in order to provide housing for soldiers stationed at several bases in central Indiana. This addition to the community increased its commercial importance because it made it easier for companies such as Carrier Corporation to store their materials nearby without having them towed away by local farmers during harvest time. Today, much of the infrastructure that once served as businesses and homes has been replaced by parks or schools; however, some remnants of those early days remain today including a flour mill that still makes bread from flour brought over from Germany and a post office that serves as a museum today.

Portage is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It originally was named for Genesee Captain George Biddle Portage. The first post office opened in 1836. In 1851, the town was renamed for General James Hays Wiley. In 1902, the name of the town was changed to Portage after its location on the White River near Prairie duChiné. The first settler in what is now Portage Township was John Armstrong who arrived in 1785 and built his log cabin on New York dirt Road (now State Road 9). He also platted what is now parts of Portage and Prairie du Chine townships with others settlers from New England who had come overland wagon trains following the Illinois-Michigan Trail. By 1800, there were 10 or 12 farmers living in what is now Portage Township. By 1836, when it became part of Kosciusko County, there were twenty-four families living here including John Dillard’s six children and their parents Peter and Nancy Dillard (née Whipple) along with three other family members: Nansemond/New Salem settler William Herndon (moved to this area from Maryland), Elijah Rogers (from Kentucky) and Jacob Fenton (from Massachusetts). Most of these early settlers came through Fort Wayne as part of General Anthony Wayne’s army during the Indian Wars; not all took up arms but many did become agriculturalists or traders involved in trade with Native Americans. In 1851, when Indiana became a state and Portage township became part of Kosciusko County, most of these early settlers moved out to larger settlements such as Noblesville or White River Junction but some remain here today including Edwin “Ted” DeWitt who has lived here since 1915; his wife Shirley died hier 2002 aged ninety-six years old; their son Ted Jr., eighty-one years old; grandsons Trevor DeWitt (born 1966), Christopher DeWitt (born 1971), Mark DeWitt (born 1978) all live here today as well as seventy two year old Patrice Kappelhoffuhlmann who still lives at her original home which she purchased from her mother back in 1924 Many fine examples can be seen throughout much of rural Kosciusko County today that date back to this period such as Patrick Jansen's five acre lot located just southwest of downtown Kosciusko on UPPER STATE ROAD 515 where he operated a sawmill until 1974; Orchard Hill Farmstead on CROSS ROAD 6 between US 131 & SR 9 east off I-465 just outside Decatur; later operations included grain elevator & feed mill at present day intersection OF SR 9 & UPPER WHITE RIVER RD.; Many more are listed elsewhere on this web site . One community that quickly sprang up around this initial group of pioneers was called "Dillon" because Captains George Biddle and James Hays Wiley both grew up nearby - Captain Wiley settling there about 1840 while Captain Biddle founded an ironworks about 1850Nansemond natives Josephine AhernDunphy & John Murtagh both worked withinCaptain Wiley's Iron Works starting about 1865 contributing $2 per day towards equipment wages plus materials they transported overland from Nansemond .This small village thrived until 1870 when gold discoveries began occurring westward across Lake Michigan making transportation difficult so development stopped abruptly leaving behind only one house remaining standing .....this building still stands next door toTownsend House today used by faculty members at local high school cafeteria ...... plural

Portage, Indiana is a town in and the county seat of Butler County,Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,851. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1827 after he sold land to the people of what is now Portage Township. The name comes from French portage meaning "the crossing over" and Clearwater Creek because it flows through the town. The first post office in Portage was established on February 14, 1828. The first store opened in 1830 and the first doctor practicing medicine here was Dr. John Burtis in 1834. The village burned down on December 5th, 1848 but was rebuilt with a new school and courthouse that same year. In 1850-1851, three churches were built: First Presbyterian (1850), Second Presbyterian (1851), and Methodist (1852). In 1861-1862 two new stores were built: Brown's China Store (now known as Brown Armory) at 5 N Main Street and Juhl's Emporium at 3 W Main Street which became one of the most popular businesses in town during this time period because it offered goods at low prices for customers who had to walk several miles to get them. In 1865-1966 six schools were built: Averill School (later known as Memorial High School), McGraw Elementary School (later known as Central High School), Mountain View Elementary School (later known as Eastern Trace Middle/High School), Milton Elementary School (later known as Northwestern Trace Middle/High School), and Parkersville Elementary Schools which are now called Keystone Heights Schools. These schools helped bring more people into Portage due to their good education opportunities along with available jobs during these times when much of central Indiana was still rural or undeveloped
