Portage was founded in 1824 by Captain John S. Greer and his wife, the former Nancy Bowen. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its location at the mouth of the White River. In 1825, Greer built a store and dwelt in the building for many years. In 1827, he donated land north of town to grow crops and establish a sawmill. That same year, Greer's son-in-law General James Ewing moved from Kentucky to Portage and started an inn called the Eagle House. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Portage. The first school was established in 1832 and served grades 1-8. A post office was established in 1836 and remained open until 1861; it was renamed Portage after General James Ewing's homeport of Buffalo, New York. The Erie Canal connected Chicago with Detroit via Buffalo; this caused rapid growth throughout central Indiana during the 1830s as entrepreneurs began exploring new opportunities on both sides of the canal! One such entrepreneur was George Hennepin (1786-1860), who built a large flour mill on the banks of White River near present day Fort Wayne in what is now downtown Fort Wayne. Due to its excellent water supply and access to raw materials needed for manufacturing processes, Fort Wayne became one of America's largest cities during this time period! In 1840, following Indian Wars between American Indians and British forces along much of western Michigan Territory, General Harrison had ordered all Native Americans west of Lake Michigan surrendered or removed from their reservations! This order led to large numbers of Portage residents fleeing into Indiana Territory for protection – some settling permanently within our borders while others temporarily took refuge within our neighbor states! In 1847/48 local farmers banded together to form a township government under JnoWm Deming (1810-1868) – one which would play an important role throughout much of our history! Deming worked hard towards creating a sturdy community that could support itself through agriculture while also maintaining social values like honesty & integrity! Many famous people have resided or visitation been located in or around Portage over time: including Andrew Jackson (President), Ulysses S Grant (President), Abraham Lincoln (President), Woodrow Wilson (President), Franklin D Roosevelt ( President) & more!
Portage, Indiana is a town in central Indiana. The population was 2,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Portage County was made by Nicholas and his family in 1786 on land that they had obtained from the Mississippian culture. This early community, known as Easton Township, was located on the east bank of the Wabash River between present-day Lafayette and Terre Haute. In 1814, General James Kettledale established Fort Dearborn here after defeating a French forces at Battle of Gratiot Creek. Kettledale named this new post for General Andrew Jackson who had recently won fame as a general during the Mexican War. In 1815, to make way for steamboats landing traffic on the Wabash River, Ft Dearborn was enlarged to include an additional fortification which became known as Battery Posey. This additionalFort Dearbornwas situated just south ofpresent-day Westport on Indiananki Creek where today's State Fairgrounds stand. In 1817, Elisha Tower built a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Lafayette and this mill helped create much of what is now downtown Lafayette. In 1825, when Jefferson Davis took office as President of America following its victory over Mexico in the Mexican–American War (1846–48), he ordered all American subjects throughout Mexico to be mustered into military service or leave their homes “in peace and prosperity” since war with Mexico would only mean economic ruin for America’s citizens living abroad—a prospect that did not appeal to many Americans because they believed their country should have been leading Europe in war against Mexico instead of sidelinesing it diplomatically; yet despite these reservations about war with Mexico Davis decided to order Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter’s Navy Department to take possession of all ports along Texas coasts including Vera Cruz so that American ships could establish a presence there while also concurrently building up armaments at sea under Porter’s command should hostilities break out between America and France over control of Alta California—a potential showdown with Napoleon III who controlled North America through his empire across Central America; but nothing ever came about such an event because France finally withdrew from Mexican territory two years later after signing an agreement with United States president James Polk which recognized Louisiana Purchase (1803). What followed were several years during which no events transpired other than merchants trading goods between Illinois and western Maryland selling items such as lumber and hardware etc., until November 24th 1855 when three men walking down Congress Street one evening found $10 worth OF SILVER NAMED THE "PORTAGE" STONES! Aftermarket prices ranged from $2-$25 per pound at this time so this discovery represented quite some significance! These "Portage" Stones were eventually authenticated by Drury & Company who used their methodsx ray analysisX carbon datingX petrographyto determine that they are approximately 1:1 Christopher Street To Old National Route 66 equivalentilesrading date ca 1850/11/24Porter never actually reached Michigan but his orders were met without incident
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the first gun sights designed specifically for pistols was a globe sighting system patented by John P. Brown in 1868. The system consisted of two large circles that could be easily focused with an eye piece, and a small hole on the back side of each circle allowed the shooter to aim through it. Brown's invention was quickly copied by other pistol manufacturers, and by 1895 most pistols were equipped with globes sight systems. The popularity of globes sights began to decline in the early 1920s as handguns became more sophisticated, but they remained popular among marksmen into the 1960s. By that time, however, most modern handguns still lacked globe-style sights, and they were replaced by dot or reticle sights in most firearms.

Portage, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati-Middletown, Ohio-West Chester, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Portage were families from Delaware County, Ohio who came to the area in 1819 as part of the Mormon Battalion during the war for independence. They built a log cabin on an old millstream and named their settlement after General Anthony Wayne's army that invaded India in 1812. The first store was opened in 1825 by Wm Higginson and his son Absalom Higginson. A post office was established at Portage in 1830, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1841, John Stephenson founded Stephenson & Company with five hundred dollars he had inherited from his father. He became one of the largest investors in early American railways and helped build some of America's most important railway systems including those between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh and Cleveland and Buffalo. In 1865 he donated land to create what is now downtown Portage; this donation made him one of the earliest developers of downtown Indianapolis. During World War II, many residents attended production plants located near Fort Wayne or other metropolitan areas for military production jobs; however, few people lived within walking distance of these facilities so downtown development did not take off like it might have if they had remained closer to home. However, growth resumed when manufacturing began moving back into town after the war ended; today Downtown Portage has become one of Indianapolis' focal points with several large commercial buildings as well as a number of residential units dating back to before Prohibition (the city banned alcohol).
Portage, Indiana is a town in Union County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Portage was John and Rebecca Brown who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky. The town started as a small Presbyterian church settlement and began to grow when the railroad came through in 1859. In 1865, the port of entry for the new state of Indiana was moved from Logansport to Portage because of growing trade with Illinois on the PACIFIC Railroad. In 1898, residents of nearby Delaware Township voted to merge their townships into Portage and they did so on April 1, 1898. That year also saw the opening of a local grocery store by grocer Wm H Eller and his assistant Charles Bounds which helped solidify downtown's commercial district as one major shopping center for all of rural Union County. In 1951-1952, during construction on I-65 near Logansport (then called "the open road"), much of what is now downtown Portage was constructed including what is now its first block - four story red brick building that housed both stores and resident homes until 1958 when it became an apartment building named "The Landing". During 2002-2003 there were several earthquakes that struck central Ohio causing damage throughout eastern Indiana including parts of Portage; however no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result. As a result some people decided to move back into old buildings vacated after those quakes happened such as The Landing apartments which still stand today across Main Street from where it once stood - complete with original wood frame rooflines and stained glass windows!
