Portage, Indiana is a small town in the state of Indiana. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by General Anthony Wayne and his wife Anne as a port for trade between Biography and Fort St. Joe on the Ohio River. The town grew slowly until it became an agricultural center during World War I when production of corn, soybeans, wheat, milk, eggs and other crops increased. During World War II, Portage became one of the first areas in Indiana to be bombed by U-2s over Chicago because of its strategic importance as a transportation route linking Illinois with weapons storage points in Michigan and Wisconsin. In recent years, Portage has experienced growth due to both residential development (the issuance of permits for single family homes) as well as businesses that have moved into the area such as Logistics Solutions which operates a truck stop adjacent to the local high school football field. Recently renovated portions of downtown include several restaurants including Purdy's Prime Steakhouse and Doner Kebab House although most traffic congestion occurs along US 231 northbound near South Main Street which is also home to many small business owners and residents who work nearby but do not have easy access to grocery store or retail stores located within walking distance like those found within other larger metropolitan areas like Indianapolis or Chicago.

Portage, Indiana is a small town located in central Indiana on the Ohio River. It has a population of 2,813 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1821 by Daniel Boone and his family. It was named after General Anthony Wayne's portage from the Miami River to the Little Big Horn River. The first store in Portage was called "The Old House" and opened in 1825. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1851, George Hennepin built the first gristmill in Portage and operated it until 1862 when it went bankrupt. In 1865, the mill was moved to Belmont and continued to be operable until 1916 when it burned down. In 1870, John Cawthon donated land for a courthouse which became operational in 1871. The original jail also became operational that year. In 1902, Wm Elee built a machine shop on what is now Main Street which served as an engine works until 1954 when it closed down due to lack of patronage. In 1915, Pastor Jenson founded First Baptist Church in Portage with 12 memberships including six women who joined him along with twelve children who he gave free education at home while he preached services at their church basement meeting house across from his farmstead residence on First Avenue North (now known as Second Avenue North). In 1925-1926, Pastor Jenson started construction of what is now Stoneridge Drive beside his church and completed it by 1928 after spending $2,000 of his own money towards its completion which included raising funds from subscriptions from local farmers who grew corn for export to Europe during this time period There are still some remaining trees planted around Pastor Jenson's property today (most notably along Third Avenue North between Main Street and Stoneridge Drive) that date back to this project - evidence that even during difficult times there were still people looking out for their community!
Portage was founded in 1813 by the Potawatomi. The first post office was established at Portage in 1816. In 1824, the Northwest Indiana Railroad was completed and Portage became a part of that railroad. In 1830, the town of Davenport was incorporated and soon after, other towns followed suit. The town of Peeblesville was annexed to Portage in 1848. The city of Indianapolis was founded in 1911 and soon after, it annexed portions of the village of Portage. The city developed rapidly and by 1930, it had over 100,000 residents. However, due to economic problems and population growth rates outside of Indianapolis, the city closed its doors in 1970.
