The land that makes up Portage was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the early 1800s. In 1834, General John Wayne and his army invaded what is now Michigan and captured Fort Dearborn, which gave rise to the legend of General Wayne's Road. The town was founded on a military post called Fort Dearborn in 1851, during the Mexican-American War. After the war, businesses began to open up in Portage and it became a thriving community with many shops and businesses. The population started to grow rapidly after World War II when industries began to boom in Indiana thanks to new technology such as refrigeration and air conditioning. In 1960, Portage became an official village when it joined Vigo County. In recent years, growth has slowed down as people have shifted towards larger towns closer to home or outside of Indiana for jobs. However, there are still some active businesses located in town including a grocery store, hair salon/spa, library/cyber cafe, doctor office (and surgery), photographer shop and more!

Portage, Indiana is located in the northwestern corner of the U.S., on the Wabash River. The village was founded in 1814 by a group of English settlers and became a major transportation hub for goods arriving from Ohio and other states. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1872, but was reconstructed and renamed Portage after its founder, James Fenton. It remained an important center for commerce until the early 21st century when it began to decline due to suburbanization and population growth elsewhere. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Portage were fur traders working out of Miami Lake. In 1814, they built a log cabin on the site that served as their headquarters until they relocated to Fort Wayne four years later. By 1830, Native Americans had begun raiding British settlements along the river and Soochie Clan chief Winnetou decided to take action. He ordered his warriors to cross the Wabash River into Indiana Territory and lay siege to Fort Dearborn (now part of Indianapolis). However, before they could reach their destination, construction began on Fort Dearborn which successfully repelled them. This event helped spur settlement within modern-day Portage County by providing residents with protection from raiders and helping feed them during their nascent period as a town. In 1835, Edward Hennessey established himself at what is now known as White Bridge over the Wabash River in order conduct trade with local tribes such as the Potawatomi (Creek) and Shawnee (Ojibway) people who lived along that stretch of river at that time. His business grew quickly enough that he soon started trading goods with Canada as well – becoming one of the first American merchants to do so. By 1840, he had bought land east of present-day White Bridge in order build another trading post called Hennepin Station which would become one of America's most successful commercial venturesvirually throughout its history; it produced over 200 metric tons of goods per year before being abandoned in 1959 due to economic problems caused by suburban development adjacent thereto).
