After years of hard work by many individuals/families in Portage over many decades – including numerous farms/outposts along Nathan Road (now Highway 21), fish market & lumberyard along Porter Road (now USerrway 22), blacksmithing shed & schoolhouse on Ferry Lane (now State Route 281) – existing businesses flourished during prohibition era (& later) due toncanned production elsewhere en masse (& some old local businesses closed intentionally or inadvertently because they couldn't compete with larger outposts); shrimping industry supplanted lace making (& other traditional village industries) beginning around 1920s; etc…."
