Davenport would later become one of America's most successful speculators and investors during the late 19th century and into the 20th century. In addition to providing access to both eastern and western markets, Indianapolis also served as a communications hub for much of northeastern Indiana during this time period. Due to its location at this key junction, Indianapolis became known as "the Crossroads of Civilization."
