Portage, Indiana is the birthplace of the modern firearms industry. The first handguns were made in this town in 1847. Firearms production began here because of its location on the Great Lakes and easy access to raw materials. In 1854, a gunsmith named John Stevens started making rifles in Portage and soon became known as one of America's leading riflemakers. His rifles were used in the American Revolution and against Native Americans. The town was also home to one of the first machine guns, called the "Tomahawk." In 1865, Stevens moved his company to Cincinnati, Ohio and continued making firearms there until 1887 when he merged with another riflemaker named George Ordnance Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company became one of America's most successful arms manufacturers during World War I. Their weapons helped turn the tide against Germany while they fought on three fronts: Battle of Ypres (1914), Normandy (1945), and Italy (1946). After World War I, Winchester resumed barrel-making operations at their original plant in Portage but became a subsidiary of Remington Arms Company in 1922. Remington then merged with General Electric Corporation to become GEICO Holdings Incorporated in 1986. In 1997,GEICO Holdings Incorporated sold its holdings in Remington Arms Company to Brownells plc., an American manufacturer of firearms supplies and accessories. Brownells then merged with Ruger & Co., which created Ruger Ltd., which still manufactures firearms here today!

The community had a population of 3,000 people when it incorporated as a village in 1868. In 1968, Portage was renamed after Gerald Ford.
The first people to arrive in Portage, Indiana were the Shawnee. The Shawnee were a Native American tribe who came to the area in the 18th century. They were followed by other tribes such as the Potawatomi and Ojibwe. These groups would settle in what is now Portage County. The first European to see the area was Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto in 1541. He reported seeing a large river called the Indiana on his trip through this region. In 1795, Frenchmen named La Salle visited this region and discovered a large body of water called the White River near present-day Geneva Township. This land had been claimed by both France and Spain before that time. In 1796, General James Kapp appointed Christopher Cushing as surveyor for this territory. Cushing map showed what is now Portage County being part of Ohio Territory at that time. In 1812, United States troops under General Andrew Jackson invaded Canada and captured Detroit during their march across the country. This event helped spur development within Michigan because it opened up new markets for goods brought back from Canada by Americans soldiers! After taking Detroit, General Jackson turned his attention to northern Michigan and begun construction of Fort Wayne on Lake Erie’s west side! This fort served as a base of operations for attacking Canadian positions throughout western Michigan! In 1825, when Michigan became a state, its government was organized into three branches: an Executive Branch with Governor; a Legislative Branch with Representatives; and an Judiciary Branch which included Courts Martial and District Courts etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera!!! portage county history
