Portage, Indiana has a rich firearms history that can be found from the early 1800s to the present day. In 1825, the first gun shop in Portage was opened by J.B. Goodwin and his partners. The shop was located on Third Street and served as a place for citizens to buy firearms and learn how to use them. From there, the shop began selling pistols, shotguns, rifles, and even cannons. In 1857, John Prentice opened The Arsenal Arms dealership in Portage. This dealership became one of the leading firearms stores in town and sold weaponry from all over Indiana and Michigan. In 1902, The Arsenal Arms store closed but its legacy is still felt today with many customers coming into the store to purchase their guns! In 1911, Fenton Manufacturing Company established a manufacturing plant in Portage to produce revolvers and other handguns! This company was successful throughout its years and continues production today!
Portage, Indiana is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,197 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Portage was John Brown who moved to the area in 1814. In 1818, Major Amos Butterfield established a trading post and named it Fort Harrison after his father-in-law, General Harrison. The first school in the community was built in 1822 by Mrs. Sarah Morse. In 1827, the town site was platted and named for General Anthony Wayne who had been killed during the Mexican–American War two years earlier. In 1830-31, a canal was completed through what is now Portage Township connecting Lake Michigan with Kankakee River via French Creek and White Creek/Portage Road. This event helped spur growth in what would become Portage Township as people began to trade goods with neighboring towns along the new waterway. By 1840, there were 11 settlers living in what would become Portage Township; all but one of these lived on Main Street which still exists today as its original name (later changed to High Street). During American Indian Wars (1853-1865), much of present day Butler County was contested between US forces and Native Americans including several battles fought near present dayPortage between September 26th & October 3rd of that year alone! The Battle of Fort Harrison took place on September 26th when an American force led by Captain Ezra Woodworth attacked and successfully destroyed an enemy fortification east of present dayPortage; this event is also recognized as one of America’s earliest victory over Native Americans! In 1865 following Union withdrawal from the war permission to keep white citizens alive expired due to lack of supplies; all black residents were ordered out of town by December 15th that year under threat they would be burned if they didn't leave immediately! Most African Americans left through various trails or roads leading into Illinois which continues to this day as Blackland Trail

Portage, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1834 by General David Wilkinson as an agricultural village on the Ottawa River. When the railroad arrived in 1847, Portage became one of its first stations and grew rapidly as a manufacturing center for leather goods, matches and other building supplies. The town's heyday came during the years of World War I when it produced munitions for the American Expeditionary Forces. Afterward, Portage declined until revitalization efforts began in the early 21st century led to a rebirth of its economy as a bedroom community for Indianapolis. Today, Portage is known for its wide variety of cultural attractions including its annual Festival of Lights and its art scene which features local and international artists.
The first permanent settlers in the area that is now Portage, Indiana were two men, Jesse H. Jones and John C. Ritchie, who came to the area in 1827. The town of Portage was established in 1830 by those early settlers. In 1836, a post office was established at Portage, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1859. In 1865, the United States Congress passed a bill creating a Territorial Legislature for Indiana Territory. The legislature created the town of Portage as its capital and authorized the erection of a public building thereon which became known as the "Jones Building." In 1868, when Fort Wayne was founded on the same site as modern-day Indianapolis, some residents ofPortage desired to establish their own municipally chartered city within Fort Wayne's limits but were unsuccessful because they could not get support from either Washington D.C., or state legislators. In 1871, an act incorporating what is now called Indianapolis was adopted by the territorial legislature and then passed into law by Governor Isaac Prentiss; this act designated Indianapolis as being part of Indiana Territory rather than being separate from it like Portage had been before. The city's boundaries have since changed several times due to various incorporations/dismemberments but have always encompassed most of today's downtown Indy including much of Southport Township (to the east) along with parts of Northtown Township (to the west).
