Portage is a town in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Portage were French fur traders in 1795. The town was platted in 1834 and named for General James Wilkinson who had served as military governor of Michigan during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1848, General Anthony Wayne built a fort here while campaigning against Native American tribes in what is now Michigan Territory. In 1851, when Indiana became a state, Portage incorporated as a village and continued to be called Wilkinson until it was renamed for its original founder on May 25, 1958. The town has been primarily agricultural since its founding but now has several manufacturing plants and businesses including one that produces electronic components for carmakers such as BMW and Ford Trucks. There are also several small businesses located within the limits of the town with many services being provided by one business or another including taxi service, plumbing services, grocery stores, mechanic shops and more. In recent years there have been efforts made by both local government officials and business owners to promote tourism along with developing new marketing strategies specifically aimed at millennials in order to bring attention to the towns unique charms which include its rich history and culture as well as its wide variety of outdoor activities available should visitors decide to make an appearance hereabouts (e.g., hiking/biking trails; fishing; swimming; kayaking). Additionally there are numerous events celebrating various aspects of local life annually like Harvestfest or Christmasfest which attract thousands of people each year from all over the Midwest who come together for entertainment purposes only - not agriculture!

Portage, Indiana was founded in 1814 by the United States as a part of the Indiana Territory. It became a city in 1907 and is now the capital of the Portage County, Indiana, area. The town was one of many settlements that were established along the newly-opened American River after it was surveyed in 1787 by General George Rogers Clark. The river served as the main transportation route between Philadelphia and Fort Wayne. The first inhabitants of what is today Portage County were Native Americans who lived near present-day Plymouth and other areas on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. After land grants were made to various families in 1814, a village called "Portage" grew up around what would become its downtown core. The first post office opened in 1815, and by 1830, there were over 20 residents living in what is now downtown Portage. In 1835, construction began on a large millwheel located downstream from where modern day Union Station stands today. By 1840, about 50 people lived here permanently with another dozen or so moving into the town each year for work at the mill. In 1862, during America's Civil War, military forces burned down much of what is now downtown Portage due to its strategic location within easy range of Confederate cannons positioned along the riverbank. This event led to some resentment among local citizens towards Union troops who had conducted an unprovoked attack against their homes without any provocation whatsoever! As a result of this conflict-era violence, many businesses and homes within downtownPortage have been preserved intact to provide insight into early community life hereabouts (e.g., brick building #2). It wasn't until 1925 that electric streetlights began lighting up Downtown Portage for all to see following approvals from then Mayor Averill Ellis and City Councilmember Harry Jaffe! The town of Portage, Indiana was laid out in 1814 by David Dodd and his brother-in-law John Stephenson. The first post office was established in Portage in 1816. In 1825, the town became a county seat. The population of Portage reached 9,000 in 1860 and 31,000 by 1900. The nationally significant Cement Company of America planted its initial sandstone quarries here in the early 20th century. By the late 1800s, the town had become a bedroom community for Indianapolis. However, due to high levels of industrial pollution and unemployment,Portage lost its status as a center of commerce and development during the 1990s and 2000s.
