Portage, Indiana is a small town located in southwestern Indiana. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Portage was Elijah Post who arrived in 1814. He and his family were the first white people to live in what would become Portage Township. The post office was established there on December 15, 1820. In 1863, when the port of Indianapolis was opened up by General George Armstrong Custer and his army during the American Civil War, many residents of Portage emigrated to live near the new city. This led to some heavy economic development in the town as businesses began locating there and workers brought their families with them. In 1907, a gas station and grocery store were built in town center; this became known as "The Square". By 1910, more than twenty-eight businesses had been situated downtown; these included seven banks and four insurance companies. During World War II much effort was expended by local authorities for plant production for war materials such as rubber tires and radios critical for military radio communications; this also created an appreciable amount of jobs for civilians within the town limits as well as outside of it. Overall however little industrialization took place until after World War II due to low demand from abroad for munitions made in America coupled with persistent technological advances which made manufacturing less necessary overall but rendered fishing unprofitable so early investments no longer yielded significant benefits over time

Portage, Indiana is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in Portage was made on the east side of the current town square by a group of men who called themselves the "Creekmen". In 1825, John Sellers and Nicholas Hines established what became known as "The Hinesville Colony", near present-day Lafayette. In 1828, Isaac Griggs built the gristmill on Nowata Creek in what is now downtown Portage. In 1830, David Gibbs moved his mill to present-day Jasper and started production of flour and other goods. By 1840, there were 10 mills in this area producing flour, Feed for Horses (fodder for horses), cheese and other items. In 1847, J.H. Nicholson founded what would become known as Nicholson's Mill which continued to produce flour until it closed in 1937. During World War I (1914-18), Portage produced munitions for the US military including artillery shells and machine guns. The post office was established here in 1914; it changed its name to Trenton in 1930 due to Illinois statehood changes that affected towns with same name throughout their borders (e.g., Trenton – north of Chicago). After Trenton's closure during World War II (1939-1945), most of its output went into storage until it reopened as an industrial plant by American Can Corporation in 1951; it closed again from 1984 to 1990 due to low demand from consumers after deregulation of manufacturing industries led by President Reagan following a series of high profile economic successes within the United States such as deregulation of energy companies which had brought about significant job growth across many sectors.). After years of investigation into why demand for certain products decreased following deregulation - culminating with establishment of a National Manufacturing Competitiveness Center - American Can Corporation announced plans to reopen its old mill under new management beginning with employee training starting in early 1992; however this never happened because American Can Corporation failed to file bankruptcy protection against liquidation while still being under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection; instead they sold their assets back to their original employees who then unsuccessfully attempted start another company called Phelps Dodge Corp.; this failure also lead directly to Gary Ladd becoming Chairman and CEO Emeritus/President emeritus/CEO since 2006 fluent speaker since 2009 when former CEO Emeritus/President emeritus Marcum Gee left for unrelated reasons unable or unwilling take over Mount Carmel Paper Company effective Jan 1st 2009 having served concurrently since Dec 15th 2008 through Dec 15th 2009 inclusive making him Acting Chairman & CEO emeritas thru Jan 1st 2009 effective date notwithstanding prior statements herein that Marcum Gee would be actingChairman & CEO from Dec 15th 2008 thru Jan 1st 2009 inclusive when he resigned effective Date notwithstanding foregoing statement herein.)
The first Europeans to explore and trade in the area that is now Portage, Indiana were French traders in the mid-1700s. The first evidence of human activity in what is now Portage County was found in 1792 when a party of French explorers discovered a small encampment of Indians on the east side of the Mississippi River. The tribe was quickly defeated, but their discovery served as an early warning to other Indian tribes about white intrusion into their territory. Portage County was created from part of Miami County on November 3, 1836. At its creation, it included all of present-day Indiana except for part of Michigan. It became one of the original Thirteen United States states on July 4, 1847. During World War II, Portage County played a significant role in helping provide soldiers with food and supplies during the conflict. In 1943, General George Patton's Third Army invaded Nazi Germany and took many strategic positions within reach of Berlin using extensive portages along the way. Many units crossed over into German soil through these ports including Patton's 1st Infantry Division which used L’Anse Aux Meadows on Lake Michigan as its staging area before crossing into Germany proper near Frankfurt am Main
