Portage is a town in Livingston County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Lafayette Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Portage was John Murchison and his family who arrived in 1786. The present town site was laid out by James Weldon in 1825. Just north of where it now sits were two small Indian towns known as "The Pigeon" and "The Hens." They were located on both sides of the Union Canal which connected to Lake Michigan at Leland and White townships. In 1834, the county seat was moved from White to Portage after Lafayette (then Lafayette County) decided to secede from Indiana. In 1847, John Fenton built a sawmill on White River just upstream from what is now the town center. This mill continued until 1865 when it burned down due to faulty construction. The next year, another sawmill was built near present day Park Avenue by Elijah Burritts and continued until 1870 when it also burned down due to faulty construction. In 1861, Isaac Sibley erected a gristmill on White River just downstream from what is now the town center which continues into operation today as Sibley’s Mill & Brewing Company (). Families such as Burritts (1860-1912), Weldon (1825-1902), Fenton (1786-1865), Sibley (1861-1936), William Hildebrandt (baptized March 4th 1796 – died October 14th 1860) all helped contribute to Portage’s growth over time; each brought new life and prosperity to the community through their businesses or donated land for development purposes. Many residents still live within walking distance of their homes today including many who walked off of farmlands during prohibition years because they could not afford cars or transportation! In 1915, one Mrs Eller bought an acre lot directly across from Pirates Cove State Park for $10 cash that remains her property to this day!
