Portage is a town in McHenry County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage was James Dolan in 1816. Dolan built a cabin on the current site of the city of Fort Wayne and named it after his brother-in-law, John Cranch. In 1827, Wm. Hays laid out a road from Vincennes to Bloomington through what is now Portage Township; this became known as the "Hays Road." In 1838, Jacob Siever settled in what are now parts of Portage and Colfax Townships and named them after himself and his two brothers-in-law: Isaac Siever and Michael Sievers. By 1840, there were twenty families living in these townships with an total population of 350 people. In 1847, David Jernigan laid out a road from Vincennes to Bloomington through what is now part of Posey Township (later Posey and Madison Townships), which became known as "Jernigan's Road". This road served as a north–south route between Vincennes and Bloomington for many years until it was diverted eastward by the construction of I-65 near Terre Haute in 1971. The first post office at Portage was established on November 7, 1848; it operated under the name "Vincennes." On October 15, 1850, Abraham Kresser set up shop along Jernigan's Road south of present day Southport when he began selling goods from his store at State Fair Park north of I-465 (now US 41). Kresser's store continued operation until about 1870 when all stores along that stretch closed because of competition from railroads. Diverting water available from several small creeks flowing into local ponds caused some landowner dissatisfaction with transportation methods used to bring goods to market so they developed their own railways: The Indiana Western Railroad (IWR) opened its line between Lafayette and Terre Haute on December 1, 1865; this line connected Indianapolis with Chicago via Elkhart Lake rather thanvia Indianapolis Harbor like earlier companies had done. By 1870s most Germans who owned land around here had left for similar reasons–land prices were too high or difficult to maintain without enterprise – but some Germans did stay behind to continue agricultural production using traditional methods including raising hogs while still maintaining control over large areas managed by their clans or groups headed by elders
