Plymouth was founded in 1795 by General David Wilkinson as a fording point for wagons traveling between east and west during the Northwest Indian War. The first post office in Plymouth was established on December 12, 1806, and served until it closed on July 1, 1814. The first store opened in 1809 and continued until it closed on October 10, 1840. In 1830, Plymouth became one of three towns within what would become Marion County; this change came about when territory that once included present-day Pike Township (northwest corner of today's Merrillville) were divided off to form that county. On August 15, 1841, General George Armstrong Clark invaded Indiana from Kentucky with an army hoping to overthrow Ulysses S. Grant's provisional government and end Reconstruction following the American Civil War; he reached Fort Wayne on September 11 after pursuing his retreat through Union territory across Ohio River into Indiana Territory under Confederate control. On November 4, 1846 – two days after Lincoln's assassination – residents of nearby Corydon voted not to secede from the Union because they felt their rights had been violated by Lincoln's death; however they did remain within Marion County throughout 1865 when that county was merged with other parts of centralIndiana to form larger Butler County In 1861 local businessman John Addison Porter purchased 2160 acres (110 hectares) east of downtown Plymouth where he built what would become known as Palmer House State Resort—the first resort complex specifically designed for tourists in America In 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt visited Plymouth while attending a meeting held at Palmer House which resulted in passage around Congress of an act establishing the Office of Conservation and Recreation which later became known as Parks & Recreation Department

Plymouth, Indiana is a small city in southwestern Indiana. It was founded in 1821 by General James K. Polk and his family as a stop on the stagecoach route between Vincennes, IN and Washington D.C.. The town grew rapidly after it was granted its own post office in 1827. Plymouth became an important railroad town, with the nearby Sandusky Railroad linking the area to Chicago and other Midwest cities. The population of Plymouth peaked at over 15,000 in 1914 but declined thereafter until it reached its current level of around 10,000 in 2000. Plymouth has been home to many famous people throughout its history including: General James K. Polk (1841-1925), Orville Wright (1892-1943), Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (1936-present), and Peyton Manning (1998- Present).
Plymouth was founded in 1787 by John Nicholson. The town gradually grew and became a major center of industry and commerce. Plymouth's economy changed in the early 1800s when navigation improved and the Erie Canal was completed. This made Plymouth an important transportation hub for goods moving north to New York City and south to Chicago. In 1815, Plymouth was renamed Indianapolis after General Andrew Jackson, who had served as its mayor during the antebellum period.
