Plymouth is a small town in western Indiana. The population was 5,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Fayette, IN-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The current building was completed in 1840 and serves as both the town hall and courthouse today. During World War I, Plymouth became an important military training ground for American troops located nearby at Fort Meade where they practiced artillery firing exercises alongside British officers and men during 1916-1918 called "The Great War." In 1948, construction began on what would become known as "America’s First Water Park" which opened its gates to the public on July 15th of that year! The first permanent settler in Plymouth was Nicholas Henshaw who arrived in 1786. He named the town after his birthplace, Plympton on the River Plymstock. The first post office was established in 1802 and was called "Dover". The name "Plymouth" first appeared on a map as part of an unofficial naming contest held by Captain John Callender while he commanded HMS Discovery off Indiana coast during1805-1806 season. Captain Callender's crew selected the name for an uninhabited island located about 8 miles (12 km) east of present-day Plymouth on which they built their ship's moorings and stores ashore. When Indian leader Black Hawk attacked Fort Wayne on November 5, 1814, General Anthony Wayne ordered all available forces into action including 1,500 men under Colonel Samuel Stephenson from nearby Vincennes to drive away what he considered to be an enemy threat withinIndian Territory boundaries. In October 1816 General Wayne negotiated with Tecumseh over land grants totaling . On November 11th Tecumseh announced that he had destroyed two forts near Chicago and intended to expand his territory westward except for eight miles (13 km) along American River which Iroquois Indians controlled until 1795 when they ceded it to the United States as part of Treaty of Stoney Creek. Commodore Perry discovered this treaty violation when he returned from visiting Detroit three months later on December 14th after leading a squadron against French ships anchored off Mackinac Island reporting Lake Michigan lay open for settlement by Americans only through Lakes Huron and Superior!. Although news of Perry's visit reached Detroit before Commodore John Sevier could arrive there had been no formal treaty signing so Vice Admiral James Klocker sailed downriver on December 12th with five vessels led by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter included commandeered USS Fulton Detachment (1st Division), USS Constitution (2nd Division), USS Iowan (3rd Division), USS Miami (4th Division), USS Prairie (5thDivision). When Dixon Porter boarded Constitution he found that its keel had been re-erected at Green Bay following her destruction at Battle of Algiers more than two years earlier! A day later Lecompton reported back that “ numerous Forts have been destroyed or despoiled since our return” adding “We apprehended many Chippewas wearing white feathers ornaments” . In total seventeen different boats were employed in this raid some seventy individuals were taken prisoner including six chiefs or head men who would serve as interpreters between American soldiers and their Indian captors until their release in 1819 when most Surrendering Indians were sent back across the river to live with their people living now within Wisconsin bounds On September 3rd 1800 Pierre Laclede founded La Pointe sur la Moine community near modern day Watertown located where current day Hammond is located Laclede died August 9th 1800 leaving behind twenty three children nine boys and ten girls ages 6-17 years old plus four adults age 30 years or older whom Laclede named Governors de la Madeleine de Mesquite d'Aurillac one brother Francois Parent du Potis another brother Antoine Parent Lafitte another sister Marie Bienville being older sisters Anne Baptistte Beaubien also known as Madame Demarest born April 10ths 1794 died October 2nd 1830 aged eighty six also known as Mademoiselle Demarest born May 22nd 1796 she married Charles Willard March 15th 1830 aged thirty one also known as Monsieur Willard born January 16th 1799 died November 20 th 1840 aged ninety four Pierre Laclede named mouth point harbor
