The first post office opened in January 1880; it closed on October 1, 1978 due to mergers with other towns within Purdue County. Plymouth experienced rapid growth during World War II when thousands of people moved into the area for work at various war plants or service companies such as GEICO or Chrysler Corporation. Today's downtown is anchored by two large shopping malls - Oneanchor mall which includes Sears and Kmart stores; and Midtown mall which includes JCPenney, Macy's and Kohl's departments store chains as well as restaurants including Indian food spots like O'Hara's Irish Pub & Restaurant or Tomy Tomy Chinese restaurant - all victims of arson over recent years targeting-- among others-- department stores adjacent to them . According to2010 census figures there are now more than 21K jobs available in this expanding region employed directly or indirectly by businesses providing services such as health care professionals (27%), healthcare providers (15%), administrative support (10%) or manufacturing (8%). The party held its first meeting at the Masonic Hall on Broad Ripple Boulevard in Plymouth. Over time, other committees were formed within the party such as finance and propaganda which led to it becoming an active political force within Northwest Indiana during this period of growth for American conservatism. The Republican Party continued to grow throughout much of 20th century with many members serving in both chambers of Congress including Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) from Iowa’s 3rd district from 2001-2007 and current ranking member Patty Murray (D-Washington) since 2009; former Congressman Bob Kuster (R-Neb.) served one term before his death in 2018; current Representative Jim Renacci (R-Ohio) represented Ohio’s 14th district from 2013 until he retired effective January 3rd, 2019 after winning primary election on November 6th; and state Senator Nina Turner (D-) represents Michigan’s 11th senate district which includes parts of northwest Dearborn County including Plymouth Township since 1997 having also been chairwoman of her home county’s Democratic Central Committee prior thereto). Plymouth experienced heavy industrialization during World War II, when much manufacturing shifted from Indianapolis to nearby plants such as Carrier Corporation and United States Steel Corporation. The war also spawned many new residents including some who had moved to Indianapolis because of job opportunities at these companies or because they were attracted by advances in transportation technology that made moving to other cities more difficult than it had been before. After World War II ended, much business activity shifted back to tiny towns like Plymouth-Morrisville Township while large employers like United States Steel retired or closed their facilities in Indianapolis or left Illinois altogether. By 2000, however, downtown Plymouth's retail sector had begun to revive thanks to increased development around Interstate 5 and new shopping areas such as First National Court Square and Market Street NE
