Plymouth is a city in and the county seat of Plymouth County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,995. The first permanent settler in Plymouth was Nicholas Doerger in 1785. Plymouth was founded on May 24, 1814 by Frenchmen Pierre-Alexandre Conte and Honoré Dieudonné as a part of the Indiana Territory. The city became an important cultural center in Northwest Indiana during the 19th century with its renowned schools and art galleries. In 1925, when the state of Indiana merged with Missouri to form the new United States of America, Plymouth became one of fifteen cities within that newly created entity. The city's importance declined during the Great Depression but regained some significance in subsequent decades as it grew into a bedroom community for Indianapolis. However, after major league baseball's inception in Indianapolis in 1962 and expanding beyond professional sports to other forms of entertainment over that decade, Plymouth's economic fortunes began to decline again starting around 2000 until they peaked around 2010 when they had their best year ever according to Forbes Magazine

Plymouth is a town in Marshall County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1825 by the brothers Alexander and John Chamberlain. Plymouth is the county seat of Marshall County. The first courthouse was built in 1828 and burned down in 1829. A new courthouse was built in 1830 and it burned down again in 1836. Plymouth became a village in 1902. In 1920, the city of Plymouth merged with the neighboring town of North Vernon to form one municipality with a population of over 2,000 people. Plymouth is one of two townships (the other being North Vernon) that make up Marshfield Township, which also includes Butler and Lebanon counties. Plymouth's history began with Alexander Chamberlain who arrived on horseback from New England on May 31, 1825. He purchased land east of what is now downtown Plymouth from David Dixon for $5 per acre ($102 today). On July 4th, 1826 he filed a plat for "Plympton", naming his new settlement after his native country Plympton, Massachusetts – but no buildings were ever erected there until 1830 when an addition to the old Courthouse building became home to the Post Office Department as well as civic meetings and social functions until 1949-50 when it closed due to economic decline among small businesses throughout America during this time period known as "The Great Depression". On December 15th 1840 Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech from the steps of First National Bank Building located near where present day Market Street meets Fourth Street; partridge fields can be seen across Market Street just south of where Lincoln spoke about 50 years ago! When I walked out front today looking back across that street more than four decades later I could still see many Of those large posts or groups that lined Fourth Street during much earlier days back then! Alexander Chamberlain had eight children: John (1827-1912), Annie (1830-1916), Rachelle (1832-1902), Sarah Jane (1835-1920), George Washington (1837-1900), Lucy Margaret (1839-1923) and Infant George Washington born on October 12th 1840 while he was staying with his parents at their summer home at Big Stone Gap outside Winchester VA until they returned home for good on November 6th 1840 only six weeks after he was born! There are commemorative markers all around town honoring these early settlers including one located between Second Avenue & Third Streets off Main Street!!! In 1850 Abraham Lincoln served as prosecuting attorney for Marshall County; one year later he moved to Terre Haute IN becoming US Senator from Illinois before leaving office to return to Marshall County where he died February 14th 1865 less than three months into his second term! One Congressional Cemetery marker says “Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb” while another plaque next to him reads “US Senator Abraham Lincoln [Marshall] Co., Ill., Feb 14 1865”!! After years of growth both inside and outside the village boundaries - most notably along Third Street just north side OF Market St & South Side Ave - by 1907 there were only 16 residents living within its walls confines compared To 301+ residents living adjacent rural streets&townships (& even further away if you counted White Star Line steamboats moored offshore!). That same decadeHP Hood Inc manufactured their very first product here – an inkwell known locally as “The Hood Pencil” which quickly gained industrywide attention because it wrote everything without smudging or fading like so many other writing utensils then available! However by 1919 local production had stopped entirely due largely to World War I conflict shortages & changing needs associated with war efforts!!! By 1938 Plymouth had declined rapidly status quo resumed following prohibition repeal && post WWI economy boomed creating numerous opportunities for growth both inside & outside limits!!! In recent years several major renovations have taken place including extensive resurfacing/restoration/remodeling Of Downtown facades w/new sidewalks, paving Additional streets bordering downtown gridlock eliminated rebuilding interior Originalities have been reinstated w increased accessibility thru public use areas such as Park View Gristmill Museum open daily 9am – 5pm except Christmas Day weekdays 9am – 3pm
Plymouth was founded in 1795 by the Pere Marquette Expedition. The settlement grew rapidly and in 1814, it became a district of Indiana. In 1827, Plymouth received its charter as a town. The population of Plymouth reached 10,000 by 1840. However, the growth of industry and the accompanying demand for labor led to increased poverty and social unrest in Plymouth. In 1861, the government moved Plymouth from state to national jurisdiction due to its Large Town Actproblem.
