Plymouth is a town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by James K. Polk and named for Plymouth Plantation in England. The first settlers of Plymouth were three men who came overland from Kentucky in November 1814: John Crouch, George Washington Moody and Abraham Lincoln. They erected a small cabin on the site of present-day Plymouth Heights and began to cultivate land which they divided into lots. A post office was established at Plymouth in October 1816, and the town grew rapidly. By 1830, the population had reached 2,000 people. In 1834, the state legislature granted company status to the Plympton Canal Company and renamed it the Pioneer Waterway Navigation Company; Plymouth became a part of that company's territory. In 1840, State Senator David Ralston recommended that Ford County be ceded to Johnson County so that Plymouth could become an important transportation center on the new Indiana Central Railroad (ICR). This recommendation was accepted by Johnson County commissioners and signed by then-President James K Polk on February 20th; however, when ICR built its line through Pulaski Township instead of through Plymouth proper, this change went unnoticed until after Polk's death in 1901. On April 29th 1865 during American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg General Nathan Bedford Forrest brushed past Union Sergeant First Class John Forbes while Forrest rode his horse up to Forbes' position on Cemetery Hill expecting to engage him directly; Forbes instead shot Forrest several times with his carbine before running away across Cemetery Ridge toward friendly Rangers hiding behind breastworks; moments later Confederate General Robert E Lee arrived on field with orders to pursue Forbes only to find himself pursued too by Union forces led by Colonel Edward Beecher McIntire - affording Forrest an opportunity almost unique within history as both generals fought side-by-side without any significant loss inflicted upon either side This event has been called "the turning point" of World War II because it demonstrated how well trained Union soldiers were relative to Confederate troops commanding similar numbers of men - leading ultimately to Confederate victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House two years later
