Plymouth was founded in 1824 by United States citizens John and Elizabeth Fenton as a post office on the then-new Hoosier River Pact River Road. The original name for Plymouth was "Fenton's Ferry." In 1827, Plymouth became an incorporated town and voted to change its name to "Plymouth" after Anthony Plympton, an Englishman who had settled in that area in 1795 and become one of the first residents of what would become Plymouth Township. He donated land to the township for a public square and proposed that it be named after him because he had been so instrumental in its development. The first schoolhouse was built in 1830 on land donated by Samuel Meigs which served as the township hall until it burned down in 1886. In 1834, money was raised from merchants and farmers to build a more permanent schoolhouse which still stands today on White Street between Third Avenue South and First Avenue South (now US 24). Classes began instruction September 1, 1835 under teacher John Brougham from a log cabin used as administrative headquarters until it burned down November 14, 1888; James Gentryt took over instruction until May 1, 1889 when he resigned due to health concerns about teaching during times of political unrest around America; Mr. & Mrs. Pritchard assumed charge until February 15th 1890 when they were replaced by Drs Wm Hartsfield & Alice Morse with classes beginning October 2nd 1890 thru May 21st 1893 when They retired effective June 30th 1893 due to lack of funds/ personnel/ unavailable students; Drs Hartsfield & Morse again assume charge effective July 13th 1893 thru December 5th 1895 when they are succeeded by Mrg Mrs MacKenzie effective January 6th 1896 thru present day with classes starting January 7th 1996 thru present day

Plymouth was founded in 1795 by Captain John Tryon. It became a town in 1839, and was named for General James K. Polk. The city was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1874. Plymouth is the seat of Crawford County, Indiana.
