Plymouth is a town in Clark and Wayne counties, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The name means "forty-eight" in English. Plymouth was founded in 1795 by General Anthony Wayne and his brigade of mounted riflemen as a military post on the north bank of the Wabash River near what is now Fishers, Indiana. At first it was called Fort Wayne but then became known as Plymouth because General Anthony Wayne's father had been born there. In 1815, General Wayne built a new fort at present-day Plymouth after Congress refused to give him land for an Indian reservation within Indiana because he had not abandoned his adherence to British rule during the War of 1812. The Pottersville Railroad reached Plymouth in 1853, making it easier for people to get to Marshall County and Chicago. For many years, Plymouth was one of the largest towns inClark County; however, its population began to decline in the 1960s due to economic stagnation and other factors such as transportation improvements made by local governments and private interests that blocked development along Interstate 65 (I-65). The current downtown area around High Street was built between 1978 and 1984 when I-65 bypassed town center completely; this created tension between downtown businesses who wanted access to I-65 traffic while housing developments were developed around them on gently rolling hills that shielded them from I-65 traffic noise, smell and view—a situation that has gradually been improved since then though occasional disruptions caused by construction or special events still occur every so often
