Plymouth is a town in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–South Bend–Carmel Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by George and Martha Plympton on the east side of the White River in 1819. Plymouth was named for Plymouth Colony (now Massachusetts), which had been founded in 1776. The first settlers were who came from England as indentured servants and were among the first to settle in this area of Indiana. In 1830, Plymouth became a village when it annexed the neighboring towns of North Manchester and Westfield. On July 1, 1836, Plymouth incorporated as a town under Republican leadership after becoming one of several Towns to ratify the new state Constitution that year. Families started growing corn and other crops near their homes around 1840; soon enough, they built their own structures with logs from nearby trees. The growth of businesses led to development of a commercial district that included two stores and four residential blocks along Main Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue from about 1850 to 1860. By 1870, much of what is now downtown Plymouth had been built including churches (St Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church 1854-1875; Methodist Episcopal Church 1865-1900) addition schools (Plymouth Academy 1863-1872; High School 1865-1896), post office (1867), jail (1868), millinery store (1870), livery stable (1871), blacksmith shop (date unknown) along with several residences including Mrs John Henson’s house on Third Avenue between First Avenue and Second Street c 1871-circa 1890). One large factory complex consisting of six buildings located on Main Street between First Ave & Third Ave.(No listing available) was also erected during this time period but has not been found since its demolition in 1984 or its possible location elsewhere Unknown - A physical remains discovered at an old quarry north east Johnson Road off I‐65 just east Of Monroeville Rd

Plymouth is a city in southern Indiana, United States. The population was 913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville-Muncie-Anderson, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Plymouth was made on the site of present day New Albany by Welsh settlers in 1814. They named their new town for the English port of Plymouth on Britain's southwestern coast. In 1836, a group of Methodist missionaries from Kentucky founded what would become First Baptist Church in Plymouth and began to baptize Indian Mennonites who had accompanied them on their trip westward from Kentucky. Baptismal services were held in an open field near what is now downtown Plymouth before being conducted inside an old courthouse that still stands today. In 1881, General James Henschel built a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of the Wabash River just north of downtown Plymouth. The mill produced flour for local merchants and also supplied flour to nearby Carbondale and Terre Haute. The Mill closed its doors in 1978 but has beenakhased as part of various buildings that have since been demolished or replaced within the city limits over time including: First Presbyterian Church (1901), City Hall (1970), Elm Street Baptist Church (1889), State Capitol Building (1912), Old Courthouse Annex (1980s), African American Community Center (1993) and new City Hall building erected between 2021 and 2024 which replaced an earlier structure that had been condemned as too small, inefficient, dated, outmoded and unsafe by then Mayor Donny Hathaway In 1951, when Interstate 85 was completed through much of southern Indiana it included a concurrent bridge over the Wabash River just east of downtown Plymouth leading directly to Carbondale across the river; this crossing became known as "Plymouth Bridge". immediate adjacent neighborhoods such as Second Avenue South & North Parkside east/west corridor lost all access to I-85 until approximately 2020 when AVEXE reconstruction finally reopened both corridors with partial access again beginning in early 2021
