Polk, who arrived on July 13, 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the Black River, which served as his Trading Post for many years before it burned down in 1821. Plymouth's second permanent inhabitant was John Whitehurst, who arrived in 1840 and built a house near the present day corner of Main and State Streets. From this house, he founded Whitehurst Mercantile Institution (later called Northwestern Indiana University) which remains one of the most respected universities in Northwest Indiana to this day! In 1847, Plymouth's third permanent inhabitant was Isaac Bowen who purchased land at what is now its intersection with State Street and Indian Road. Bowen established a brewery called Bowman Brewery which still operates today - an important part of Plymouth's economy during those early years! In 1893, Abraham Lincoln visited Plymouth while campaigning for election to the US Senate from Illinois; he later wrote about his experience: "I passed through Plympton [...] It has been my pleasant surprise to find here among us some people I knew when I lived there thirty years ago." This visit marked an important turning point for Plympton - it had previously been considered an unimportant farming community with few residents outside of its tiny core radius! After Lincoln's visit, things changed rapidly for Plympton - within a few years it had become one of the most vibrant communities in Kosciusko County! The population grew so rapidly that by 1830 there were more than 200 people living in Plymouth! During these times poverty wasn't always an issue; instead many families relied on their farms or businesses to provide them with necessities such as food and clothing! However, after World War II growth slowed significantly thanks to new competition from larger towns throughout Kosciusko County! The late 1800s were difficult for Plymouth due to several factors including rapid population growth combined with increasing social unrest fueled by newly acquired knowledge about civil rights movements across America following Reconstruction (1865-1877). Although efforts were made by local officials over time to reverse these trends (e.g., establishment of schools and employment opportunities), progress remained slow overall despite aggressive marketing campaigns by native-born citizens seekingto revive interest within their community Despite some successes over time - such as creation of two Masonic lodges and successful fundraising campaign leading up to Town Hall moved into new location – much like other small towns throughout America experiencing similar struggles during this period – ultimately stability could not be achieved without additional resources coming from outside sources such as state government investment or philanthropy!"
