Plymouth is a town in Iroquois County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Plymouth is one of the few remaining towns in Iroquois County that retains its original settlers and architecture from the 1800s. The town was originally named "New Carthusia" after Saint Christopher, but it was renamed Plymouth in honor of Admiral John Trenchard on December 10, 1814. Plymouth is also home to Mount Hope Cemetery and Pioneer Cemetery.

Plymouth was founded by Captain John Noble on December 3, 1795 as an outgrowth of a push to gain access to land that would now be in central Indiana. The first settler named Plymouth was James Gist who arrived November 9th, 1802 from London with his family. James Gist's brother also became a settler in this area which he named "New Salem" because he believed that it would soon become an agricultural center due to its rich loam soils and good water supply potential. The first post office in Plymouth was established on February 14th, 1806 by Lyman Beecher and later operated by Samuel Morse under license from the state government. Samuel Morse donated land for a courthouse which was completed in 1814. In 1830, when Charles Wabash purchased large tracts of land east of present day downtown Plymouth from Colonel John Potter (the original owner) for $5 per acre ($140/acre), he began what is known as Wabash's Purchase campaign which aimed to establish Fort Wayne as an important center along Northwest Indian Trail (now I-65). Because Wabash wanted more control over this valuable land southwest of Dearborn Street (entrance into downtown), he started construction on what are today known as Beechcroft Heights neighborhood blocks east of Niles Road between Courtland Avenue and North Saline Street beginning in 1830; these blocks were developed into much older neighborhoods such as Forest Hills South or North End today. In 1837, William Hough moved his family from Newark Delaware to start a gristmill near where present day First National Bank stands today on State Road 7 south of Fountain Square; this mill became one of the most successful small businesses in early Indiana until it closed around 1960 due to lack of competition from larger mills throughout the state during that time period. In 1839 Govt ordered new platting system for township development so many people living outside town then living off their fields had no choice but move either into town or leave - those leaving did so voluntarily before forced evictions took place starting about 1840 although there were some violence associated with this relocation process especially during 1840–1849 when many families left without food or shelter thereby leading to several skirmishes between local farmers and men found traveling down State Road 7 looking for them when they finally arrived back home late at night after days long travel only finding empty homes ahead waiting for them inside! This forced migration led directly to many slave rebellions taking place throughout Central Illinois due northward including nearby Fort Wayne where slaves constituted up 30% – 40% majorityof all adults working on plantations whilesouthwest Illinois depended overwhelmingly upon slave labor both white & African American making it difficult for any individual or group tryingto resist emancipation efforts anywhere within limits other than central Kentucky & Missouri even though those areas had no similar barriers preventing free blacks from moving westward into southernIndiana
