Plymouth, Indiana is known as the “ Ammunition Capital of the World.” This huge city was founded in 1814 by Captain James H. Caldwell, who became interested in ammunition sales. He built a store on the corner of State and Washington Streets and soon began to sell artillery rounds, pistols, and rifles to the Indian population throughout central Indiana. In 1827, he opened a store adjacent to Fort Dearborn where he sold ammunition to General Wayne during his military campaigns against Native Americans. The first gunpowder factory in America was built here in 1830 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte (or Conte) for making rifle cartridges for the American Revolution. Plymouth also manufactured cannons for the US Navy during the Revolutionary War and post-revolutionary times until it closed its doors in 1865. The manufacturing industry ended because of lack of demand from wars abroad or from technological advancements that made other types of munitions more efficient than Reloadable rounds (RLRs). Plymouth experienced a rebirth beginning in the late 1800s when entrepreneurs decided that this large city could be an important center for powder production due to its location at the convergence of several major rivers. These new entrepreneurs started manufacturing lead shot and brass cannonballs using old technology suited only for reloading RLRs rather than developing new technologies which would have attracted new customers and led to increased profits. This rebirth led to new housing developments, businesses, churches, schools,and hospitals being constructed all around town while major streets were renamed after famed powder manufacturers or other key personalities associated with those industries: Donelson Street after Colman Claydon; Market Square after John Smeaton; Josephine Street after Augustus Saint-Gaudens; and Erie Avenue after George Armstrong Custer’s great-grandfather – all areas now known as Old Town Plymouth . Notables such as Edwin Gresham (the founder of Gresham Bullets), Elijah Ayres (founder of Armour & Co., one of America’s leading firearms dealers before WWI), Frank Lloyd Wright (creator of Wrightwood Elementary School), J Edgar Hoover (headquarters for FBIHQ until 1975), Melvin Laird (owner/operator of Illinois National Guard Armory from 1915 until his death in 1978) were born or raised hereabouts too! Today Old Town Plymouth is home to a number of cultural institutions including Grand River Valley State University (GRVSU), annual powwow at White Sands Apache Nation Casino Resort & Spa on Saturday night each year featuring traditional dance performances by local bandshell performers; Heritage Park which features historical exhibits on various aspects pertaining to Plymouth Municipal government dating back over 125 years; Assembling Place where events are held annually related both historically speaking and artfully designed outdoor exhibits showcasing local artists work contemporaneously with their permanent installations inside Assembling Place ; as well as numerous restaurants serving up tastes unique unto itself within walking distance surrounded by vibrant gardens filled with botanical sculpture representing every continent except Antarctica!

Plymouth is a town in Marshall County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to Plymouth were French missionaries who came in 1795 and established a mission there. The first settlers were Englishmen who arrived in 1814. They built a small fort on the site of what is now Plymouth High School. In 1825, the Treaty of Stroudsburg set up boundary lines for Indiana and Illinois and Plymouth became one of the two towns in Marshall County that did not fall within those boundaries. In 1830, General James Kinsolving gave land to the town for educational purposes; Plymouth High School opened its doors that year. In 1836, John Fenton donated land to build a courthouse; that building still stands today as the town's courthouse annexe. A post office was established at Plymouth in 1839 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1915. The Town Council erected a public buildings complex on what is now State Street between Market and Dearborn Streets in 1865; this complex includes the original courthouse which was used until 1985 when it was taken down and replaced by a new courthouse-style building which opened on October 10, 2006 Plymouth has been through many different phases over its history including being an agricultural center during prohibition (1870–1920), becoming an industrial city during World War II (1945–1949), experiencing growth after amalgamation with Terre Haute (1974–1981), declining growth following amalgamation with neighboring cities (1991–2001) before experiencing again growth from 2002-2010 due to population increase (+10%).
