India ink production also commenced here during this time frame with some success but stopped after a few years due to high input costs and competition from other refineries. In 1860, General Neely donated land for a new courthouse which became operational on October 1st that year. This court house served as the centerpoint for government business within Plainfield until 1905 when it moved to Indianapolis.[5] In 1865-1866, Plainfield voted to secede from Indiana under the banner "Equality is Our slogan" following an altercation between white farmers and black freedmen near Newark Junction on November 15th that year which left one man dead and several injured including 3 infants born premature at the scene![6][7][8][9][10]-the event known as "The Newark Junction Incident". Plainfield was founded in 1824 by two brothers, Jonas and John Quincy. The town was named after the Plainfield farm where they were born. The first post office in Plainfield was established in 1827. In 1830, the town had a population of just 10 residents. In 1835, Plainfield became the capital of Indiana. On July 14, 1836, Indian Chief Tecumseh attacked and defeated a force of U.S. troops led by General David Wilcox at Battle Creek Massacre near present-day Westville, Indiana. This victory helped solidify American control over the area around modern-day Indianapolis and marked the end of Native American resistance to white settlement in what is now Indiana. In 1840, Nathaniel Hawthorne moved from Massachusetts to start his own publishing company called The Dialectical Review which published works such as "The Marble Fable" and "The Wasp," among others. In 1850, Plainfield became an organized township with a government that included a sheriff, assessor and five trustees who oversaw agriculture, commerce and public improvements within their limits
