The original town site lay east of present-day Elmira Road and west of Bellefontaine Road on the north side of Fort Wayne Lake. In 1851, the first courthouse and jail were built; they remain standing today as part of the old town center. In 1860, residents voted to incorporate as a city; this action created a municipal government which still exists today. On July 1, 1907, Plainfield became one of 118 townships (towns are local governments that are not constitutionally required to have a school district) within the new tri-county area created by Indiana's statehood law; this area included all of Butler County except for Stroudsburg and Washington Township (now Delaware). A fire destroyed most buildings in downtown Plainfield on October 3, 1907; however no one was injured as a result. The building that burned still stands today – it is known as “The Old Courthouse” – and has been used as an event hall since 1990. One hundred years after being founded, Plainfield remains one of Hoosier Townships' oldest municipalities with over 2 million residents across four counties - more than any other township or county within Marion County alone!
