Plainfield is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2000 census. The Town of Plainfield was established in 1824. The first post office in Plainfield was established on March 7, 1825. It was moved to its current location on Main Street in 1871. The town is named after nearbyplainfield Township which was organized by the General Assembly on November 16, 1800 and settlements were laid out in what is now Plainfield Township on February 3, 1802 by John Hendrickson and three other settlers from Pittsburgh Township. The name "PlainFIELD" originated with a request for a tract of land that had been offered to them by James Kieft of New York City who also gave them land north of the Miami River where they built their first store west of Indianapolis. This original grant called for 100 acres (40 hectares) and it became known as "PlainFIELD." In 1830, Elijah Wood bought 8 acres (3 hectares) in present-day Plainfield from Nicholas Goodrich for $100 and began developing it into what is today's Woodstown Cemetery. In 1831 he donated another acre (1 hectare) to local charity which became the site of the new Methodist Episcopal Church – Today's First Baptist Church – located at 601 E Main Street today. In 1840 Daniel Webster purchased 4 acres (1 kilometer²) east of present-day Edwardsville from Nathan Weems for $50 and began developing it into what is now Webster Parkouge Park - one mile long and 1/2 mile wide with rolling hills covering most of its area today including sections that are still within plainfield township limits along both sides of Main Street between Webster Avenue and Elmwood Road; this parcel also included much valuable woodland including part or all of what later became Notre Dame University campus).Webster also donated 3 additional acres (10 kilometers²) adjacent to his property just south-west of main street extending northwestward beyond present-day Webster Avenue leading up to Brush Creek before turning northeastward along Brush Creek bedrock until reaching Elk Grove Road - forming an almost continuous belt measuring 2 miles wide starting at Elk Grove Road near where Brush Creek leaves Elmwood Road continuing southwestward paralleling Elk Grove Rd until intersecting Indianola Rd just east thereof - forming yet another nearly continuous belt measuring about 2 1/4 miles wide terminated by a point about two miles southeast cornering Ira Monroe Drive then running northeastwesterly following Ira Monroe Drive some 400 feet until meeting US 15 again just east thereof near Elkhart Lake - all these lands are still within plainfields township boundaries as well as portions lying outside it such as partslying Evanston Heights neighborhood situated northwestof main street while brush creek runs concurrent easterly parallel thereto); this original gift led to several grants more land being given over time making PlainFIELD an extensive farm home landscape bounded only by open woods & fields once upon a time rural rather than enclosed & developed like many townships have become today; thiseembracing openness has resulted in Audubon Zoo PO box #### being located right next door to downtown woodstown!

Today, businesses throughout PlainFIELD operate out of high-rise buildings along Main Street and within easy reach of numerous amenities such as shopping malls and movie theaters. These days, most residents are commuters who use public transportation to get to work or local restaurants and stores located near their homes
